Don't Let a Crash Ruin your day!

Ever had your computer crash or a hard drive go bad and you have to reload all your programs. You can find the disk but the activation code or license number is somewhere but you can’t find them! I have went through all of the above and the other day heard about a program that gives you a list of all installed programs on your system and gives you the activation codes or license numbers to reactivate, if you ever have to reload the program. It searches your computer and you print out the list of programs installed with all the information you need to reinstall.  It is available at Belarc.net. The great thing is it is free. If you combine this with The Carbonite Back up system you will never have to worry about another crash. If you are not familiar with Carbonite it is an on line back up system that copies all you files to an on line directory. Should your system crash you just put in the new hard drive and reinstall all your files from the on line back up. Great system and it is under $50 a year. These two products take all the worry out of hardware crashes or a virus ruining your day.

Gary, you have a knack for this kind of stuff. Thanks.

By the way Han Solo was encased in Carbonite on Empire Strikes Back.

Gary, I have been using Carbonite for a few months and it has saved my rear once already. I downloaded Belarc Advisor and will use it.

By the way, Belarc is at http://www.belarc.net (not .com).

Thanks, Gary. I corrected that error. Carbonite saved me a few times as well, when I screwed up a big data base I had been working on. I just went back and retrieved the last saved copy which was only an hour old and was back in business. Once the initial copy is done, they back up files quickly. Normally within 5 minutes. It is a great system and one I am sure glad I use.

Gary,

I am always very leery of internet free-bees especially when you  invite them to have access the most vulnerable information on your computer.

The safest way is to start a log book to enter  all your hardwaree and software pertinent data and keep that book in your office.

Nate, on weekends, I get encased in carbonated beers.  Much more satisfying.

Gary, I'm going through a major pain with my laptop right now! It's happened to me once before and now it's the same thing. It acts as if it's overheated and shuts down after just 10 - 20 minutes of being on. Can't even back up the darn thing since it shuts down without any warning. I ended up getting an external hard drive and am slowly backing up all my important files in parts small enough to get them backed up before it shuts down. Major pain but the hard drive back up seems to be just what I needed. Can't wait to have it all copied so I can finally get the laptop fixed!
