Agents in 6 states pay sales tax on commissions--do you? Are you next?

Attached is a proposal from the State of Michigan that may tax over 120 services, including real estate and real estate related services.  The document says 6 states are currently taxing real estate services specifically.

CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF YOUR STATE DOES?  DON'T TELL ME CANADA BECAUSE WE HAVEN'T DECLARED WAR ON THEM YET.   Smile  BUT SERIOUSLY, if you know what state does, please reply.

BTW, I AM PLANNING TO OVER THROW MY STATE GOVERNMENT SO I THOUGHT IT MAY BE A GOOD IDEA TO DO SOME RESEARCH FIRST.  Devil  ATTENTION MICHIGAN AGENTS . . . any ex-military among you that wish to join in or offer advice?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Al,

LOL...who would ever declare war on Canada??? lol We're too busy "chillin"!

Well, we've had the GST (Goods & Services Tax) for many years now...and it just got reduced from 7% to 6%!!!! The biggest problem with these taxes is the amount of time it takes for individuals to calculate and remit. We collect it in our commissions, then we have to add up all the GST paid on our business expenses and remit the Government the balance. It's extremely time consuming...and extremely costly to all!

Mark...no doubt I should be selling in Florida, obviously land of the tax free!

Have fun, I doubt if there's any turning back, but good luck all the way!

Donna

Has the Governor had a physcial examination?  She's not helping Michigan - she's making the economy worse!   Michigan is already taking a bath - there is nothing that cannot be done?  I'm right behind Gail - I'll sign up without hesitation!!

In Utah, they tried to pass a sales tax on commissions two years ago.  Luckily, several members of the House and Senate are Realtors. =)  I understand they have a sales tax on commssions in New Mexico, but do not know any details.

Nothing against Canadian's (I have cousins there) but in case you weren't aware she's a Canadian by birth - don't know how she ended up here.

This was the reason...I made sure my vote counted this year!!! But, she was still relected. I hope that all here supporters are not goinging to be moving anytime soon. You better believe I have share my thoughts with many comsumers about this. I don't think she really has any idea what this will mean for future real estate business... Yes our sellers & buyers and we "Realtors" will be paying the price for her foolish action. She is only thinking of the here and now!! "where can I get the money to cover my ***". Shame on her.. and when her term is over.. off she will go, to another state.. Just watch it will happen.

Did you hear about the bone? These nuts are sneaky. They propose giving a credit on a vehicle trade-in to a dealer against the cost of a new car. The idea is if you trade a $20K car at a dealer for a NEW $30K car, you'll only be taxed on the $10K difference. Sounds good on the surface but it only has meaningful effect for those fortunate enough to be able to trade in relatively new cars with remianing high values on yet another brand new vehicle. What about most of the rest of us who keep a car till it's almost worthless?, or sell it ourselves and replace it with a better deal we get on a 1 or 2 year old car from a private seller?  The whole vehicle tax program is a sham anyway.  A $30K new car is taxed $1800. That same car is again taxed a year or 2 later when it's resold for $20K at $1200.  Again when it's 2-3 years old and resold for $10K it's further taxed at $600, and so on.  Bottom line, the state gets around $3600 during the average life of a $30K car, or about 12%.  I bet these lawmakers hire consultants like David Copperfield to help them devise their illusions.

Hey Gordon,

That tax credit on the 20k is because you are trading it in, and have already paid the taxes on it. That car probably originally cost $30k so in reality, trading it in you have depreciated the car 30% and since you have already paid the taxes on the full $30k its only fair you get the tax credit.

Otherwise with out this "bone", you would actually be getting a tax penalty on top of drive off the lost depreciation with new car ownrship.
