Blog Comment Spam - How to Handle It?

By: Beth Larsen

Well, I suppose it was only a matter of time, but today I've had to delete about a half a dozen total spam comments posted to my P2A blog (auto ads, viagra, what-have-you). Fortunately, I had elected to monitor comments, so none of them are publicly visible.

Has this happened to anybody else here, and if so is there anything that can/should be done about it? So far, I've just deleted both what was sent to my inbox and my blog.

Moderate all comments so that only those that you approve are posted.  That or review all of your posts on a regular basis and erase any that are inappropriate.  Generally speaking it is easier to just moderate them.

I agree, always check your comments prior to posting. There is too much of the spam put out their. They look for news ways to advertise their *** anyway they can and if that means hi-jacking your blog then so be it.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the internet.  I've had one of my blogs online since early 2004 and I can't tell you how many comments I've had to delete over the years.  Yuck!!!

Yeah, yuck is right. I already had them set up to be moderated, but was hoping against hope somebody had a magic wand, I guess. Makes me want to take a bath.

Congrats Beth!

Comment spam, as awful as it is, does have one good thing about it.

It means your blog and its posts are being indexed in the search engines. The spammers won't waste time spamming a blog they don't think will be seen.

So it's sort of a good thing!

My WordPress blog has two spam blockers in it. In the last six months, they have blocked over 22,000 spam comments.

Ridiculous isn't it?

About all you can do is monitor and delete....

Ouch! 22 THOUSAND!!! Uncle!

I'll stop complaining...and thanks, Jay for pointing out the Silver Lining!

The thing that IS ridiculous is that they could POSSIBLY imagine that this could be an effective way to advertise. Is somebody actually paying them money to do this?

When I first started a blog, I set it up to monitor the comments but I had not even given a thought to spam!  I did it because I was afraid that an non-techie, unknowing person making a comment on the blog would put all sorts of personal information and sure 'nuff, someone did.  Shortly after I started the blog, a recently divorced person with kids put all sorts of stuff about their family and situation in the comment.   Definitely MONITOR those comments!

Darn, and I was thinking of advertising all my listings on your blogs! ;) Thank God we have the Handshake Agreements! LOL Ok, ok, that wasn't as funny as it sounded but I hope you found the humor in it. It is amazing the things people attempt to think of to attempt to get some product/service noticed. AAAAAAHHHH! Can you imagine living in the same house with the kind of person that actually thinks this stuff up? I'm betting these are some very devious individuals. Each night before going to sleep you get in your PJs, say your prayers and then ask yourself if you remembered to hide your wallet and other valuables. LOL

I was feeling sorry for myself that I have had hits on my blogs but no comments! Guess I better consider myself lucky!

Roberta - I went to your blog to leave you a comment and you've got comments disabled...  Somewhere in those blog settings you need to turn on commenting. (Sorry, I'm about to head out or I'd look for exactly where)
