The Impact of Moving an Established Domain? Opinions, please!

By: Beth Larsen

Hello Gurus,

I am looking for real-life and SEO feedback on the implications of moving an established domain (3+ years) from one website to another where it would become the default domain(yes, my P2A site which is currently under another almost 1 yr old domain name, which would remain as an extra name).

Would I lose any PR or Search Engine rankings I have accrued? Any other impact I may not have thought of?

I'd love to hear your opinions and real-life experiences.

Thanks in advance!

Beth

Some search engines won't really notice, at least not fast.  I have had some sites remain ranked the same way for years, according to old title, description, and keywords.

Google will adjust your placements fairly quickly, based on page title and keyword saturation, based on whatever is at the P2 site.

As long as the older domain is not blacklisted anywhere, and if did not have any special rank before which might be lost due to a change in keywords,  then the move should help rather than hurt.

The older domain will get a few bonus points for having been around longer.  If you go ahead and register this domain for 10 years into the future you can pick up more brownie points from google.  They figure if you are planning on being around that long then the web site must be one of the better ones on topic...

Beth,

I subscribed to Point2 one year ago and moved a domain which had been in existance for many years, and was well ranked with many search engines, including Google. I took care to build the same SEO friendly attributes in to my new Point2 site and didn't miss a beat. Nothing has changed for me.

Thanks Gents,

You're helping to relieve my paranoia about change....I must be getting old, I never used to fret like this!

I've actually been thinking about changing my domain name on my point2 site, but was wondering about the effect on my rankings too.  I'm doing pretty good for my key words with Google and Yahoo.  If my domain name changes, but all other content remains the same what will be the effect?

Also, I know there must be a way to redirect people to the site at the new domain name if they go to the old one.  Anyone know how that would be accomplished?

I posted this on the message board also and Suzanne Stephens pointed out the the PR on Move2Sedona.com is lower than the P2 site, which would probably have the effect of dragging the P2 site down to that level. I confess I've neglected the old site while developing the P2 site, ViewAzRE.com.

Should I try to get the PR up again before attempting this manoever, or just go for it and get it over with?

Googel PR tends to be horribly over-rated. In a recent PR update (over the last 10 days or so) many very high PR sites (blogs mostly) got hammered. However their search engine placements remained steady.

PR is but one of dozens and dozens of factors used to rank where to put a page in search results. PR as displayed in teh toolbar isn't even really accurate anyway.

Where a page shows up in search results is far more important than the Google PR.

I changed the domain on my blog about a year and a half ago. Took a short-term (3 week or so) *small* hit in search placement for some search terms that had part of the old domain in them.

If you have a lot of people linking to the old domain, it would be best if you could get them to change the link to the new domain. But that may prove difficult.

You're changing from ViewAZRE to Move2Sedona, correct? And the Sedona domain is the older of the two? If that's the case I think the Sedona domain is a little better (it at least has the keyword Sedona in it) and wouldn't worry at all about a PR difference. You may take a short term hit in placement while Google sorts it out, but it would be worth it in the end...

Thanks so much Jay.

My other dilemma is...what the heck do I do with the website that Move2Sedona has been attached to? It's not bad looking but is not very functional & is a PITA to get changes made to, but as my (so-called) web designers put it, it is a "business card on the web"....so should I point another domain name to it and use it to forward business. Or should I just let go of it? At this point I've already spent the money on development, and hosting is paid to next June.

If you don't mind taking a look? http://www.Move2Sedona.com

If it is a complicated issue I wouldn't mind paying a consulting fee.

Thanks again,

Beth

"Business card on the web" is a pretty much overused, 1990's term. You really only need one "business card"...

Does it get traffic? Does it rank well in search engines for any reasonable term someone might use? If the answer to either of those is a "yes", then it couldn't hurt to keep it. You could get a domain name attached to it and just let it ride. (I would add a prominent button on the home page linking to the "new" Move2Sedona site.)

If it doesn't get much traffic or rank well, then it may be time to let it go when the hosting comes up for renewal.

The whole site appears to be built in tables, so it has GOT to be excruciating to update.

Yeah, that's the word....excruciating. I got a quote of $500 from IPowerWeb (current host) to 'fix' the problems and give me back-end access, but I've been playing with their 'v deck' control panel and don't really think I want to put myself through it.

Actually I found their "business card on the web" comment to say more about how dated their thinking is than of any real use, so the '90's is about right...

P2 is just SO much easier to work with.

Thanks Jay...so do I buy "GoToMove2Sedona.info" or something like that?

on another note...

I wonder why the messages from this thread don't seem to be coming to my inbox?

BTW, credit where it's due....the "business card" comment & crummy design is by PK Innovations NOT IPowerWeb.
