Thinking about thinking...

A Mentor

By: John Bourassa

Since you have been a  Realtor®, do you have a mentor or colleague who inspires you, whom you look up to? (Motivational speakers are excluded)

There are many of my peers whom I admire and respect profoundly but there are three in my view who are my shining stars: two are brokers, one of which is my best friend and mentor, and the third is probably one of the best and honest real estate salesmen ever who is consistently a million dollar + “earner” year after year.  I have had the privileged to work with them for years, and I still am.

Yes my BIC if it was not for him I probably would not be where I am today! And I only have to give him $300 per closing!

I have been trying to find one for 3 years and not one that seems to be out for their own personal gain and is honestly their to help me suceed.

I've mentored a lot of people in my life and still do through kids baseball, junior achievment, big brother / big sisters and even in my past career as a DJ, I still have people call for advice and I freely give it and will even help them write business plans just to help them suceed.

I come from the line of thinking you need to give to receive. I'm glad you have found so many in your life and wish you continued success.

I basically have the same comment as Todd.  I, too, have looked for someone to help me with no other agenda but to be a decent human being.  I'm a mentor of at risk teen girls and it is so rewarding, so it's not exactly selfless, but it's definitely human.

My BIC has been my mentor for seven years.  She's wonderful and has earned my loyalty 'til my dying day.  She has not only taught me the nuts and bolts of this business but has also given me many of her secrets.  I'm known, even by her own family, as the "fifth Rivet daughter".

I'd like to respond, though, to those of you who have not yet found a mentor, but have been one without much recognition.  Believe me, it's there.  It may take some time, but it will come back to you.  Don't stop and always be aware that when you positively affect one, you affect the future of many.

Todd and Belinda,

A mentor is not necessary a person who deliberately takes on that responsibility to tutor you.  He/she can be someone you know whom, without admittance, you admire and look up to.

Two of my mentors are not even aware that I have adopted them as such.  They are just remarkable achievers whom I always carefully paid attention when they have addressed our associate meetings and they are whom, from time-to-time, I steal some of their ideas, practice methods and wisdom. They have taught me so much without knowing it.

Ok, John, then yes I do.  It happens to be a salesman of institutional espresso machines with whom I worked for 8 years.  We became very good friends and he is the best salesman I have ever met.  He is truly caring about his customers' best interests and earns a good living by taking care of them.  We haven't worked together for 3 years now, but we still talk to each other on the phone at least once a week.  He shows the same interest in me and my career as he does his own.  It's a remarkable relationship.

Thank you for bringing this to the front of my brain!
