Thinking about thinking...

HGTV (Home and Garden TV)

HGTV (Home and Garden TV)

If  HGTV ever decides to launch their own real estate brokerage firm, I will join them in a heart beat.

That TV channel is like Fantasy Island Homeland or the Town of Perfect portrayed in the Walgreens TV commercial.

By gosh, everything is so easy there.  They take customers out to see 6 houses always in wonderful neighborhoods, buyers narrow down to three homes in less than 30 minutes and they buy a dream property every time.  Besides they never show dumps that are for sale.  All objections are trivial and every buyer is young couple under 35 or  a young single mother who seems to qualify even though prices of homes they are looking to purchase are astronomical.

I think that would more lucrative than working for Redfin.

John,

I have been contacted by them several times (via EcoBroker.com) to do a show on customers looking for a "Green Built Home."  Trust me once you read the agreement you understand why it looks like clock-work on TV.  Now if I could just find that customer, who wants to be a TV star; I'd be all over it!

John, I think my sellers watch the show and expect the same results. How about the ones where an agent lists the home, tells the client to make $$$ of repairs by the open house 3 days away, seller complies and there are multiple offers resulting from the open house.

I think the only show that truelly protrays our business is "Buy Me". My hat is off to HGTV for that show, it is about the only one I watch any more on that channel.

James, I am curious about the agreement, can you share any parts of it?

John, I agree, agent walks through the house saying this is the living room, this is the bedroom, Then if the buyer buys it, no wait, they have to look at 2 others and then pick their favorite from the 3. Then the agent is shown with 1 piece of paper they sign and then the agent calls them and opens a bottle of champagne.

I wonder how many people are in real estate today because House Hunters had made it look so easy.

Now someone ought to do a parady on THAT!!

Gary,

I'll pull out the contract and make sure I can share it with you all... As you know there are sometimes non-disclosure agreements written in. But Mary pretty much has outlined how it works.  All the bases are covered going in.

"Real Estate Confidential" on the Fine Living Network actually does a pretty good job of showing real life real estate. They've had episodes with unrealistic sellers, flakey buyers, and more.

Gary,

I cant spell out the particulars here but I can tell you everyone involved knows what is going down before it happens.  One of the biggest constraints is the time to get it all in.  It is not so much they are trying to make it look easy, they just have a story they want told and limited time to do it.
