What's Wrong With This Pic?

This morning, I received a beautiful piece of marketing with a BIG BOO BOO.

This was a flyer for a 1M+ home. The photos were gorgeous, the description enticing, all the information I would have wanted was in there.

The flyer mentioned that the seller was an owner/agent.

All the contact info was at the bottom . . . including . . .

AN AOL E-MAIL ADDRESS!

WHA?

An agent who owns a million plus home SURELY can afford to have their own domain e-mail addie?

Agents, be aware that when you use AOL, Yahoo, Hotmail or Google etc for an e-mail address, you are undermining your branding (as these portals are your competition!) and possibly limiting the possibility your message will be read by many viable prospects because of either incoming or outgoing spam filters.

The only time an AOL addie is a good thing is if you travel a lot, because it is more easily accessible in remote areas or foreign countries. So it's good to have as a backup.

The only time a 'portal' addie is a good thing is for when you submit to search engines or send off for anything that will get you back a lot of spam.

Brand yourself. Get a domain and use the e-mail from it.

I sure hope she can sell that beautiful home . . .

Agreed, good post. I give AOL a slight bit more credit for that reason...but am sceptical about working with anyone that operates with a Yahoo or MSN or Google account as their full time address.

Doesn't seem very professional to me.  Is Real Estate just a hobby with this agent?  ($M home aside)

Candace your right again. Except there is NO good time to use AOL address. Brand yourself is the key "not even your company" but "you"

I don't like the the candace@company.com either.

All e-mails are easy accessible from the road.

Sounds like a part-timer trying to sell her own house, go get the listing she needs help.

My opinion.

LOL, right on Dan! But another thing wrong with the flyer was it didn't say what city it was located in. The agent is CA/AZ so it could be San Diego, Sedona or Fountain Hills . . . none in my service area! ;)

agent@company.com is probably the worst, unless you own the company . . . how many agents stay at the same company all their life? That broker holds all the contacts to that addie hostage.

Guilty!  I guess it was just easier to use the email address everyone knows not realizing that others, who don't know me, would have an easier time remembering the web address.  Actually much easier.

Something I have done, though, is use my website name as my user name on various local message boards/forums (less the dotcom).  Its so easy to remember (capecodcathy) and I've actually had many people just google it and land on my site.

So I have been busy today changing all my email addresses to my website addy.  I have that address forwarded to my "usual" address.

Thank you for the swift kick in the rear, O Great One! ;)

Never had a branded email, never had problems and I've been in the business for 10 years now.  Most agents and brokers in our area use their company dot com or yahoo, aol, juno, their internet provider, etc.

Now, be sure to set up a new email account where the message is being forwarded to so that you can switch to the new account when replying to messages that were forwarded. (I feel like I just spoke in circles!) I use Outlook Express and with one incoming account, I have about 10 'masked' outgoing accounts so I can respond using the same one used by the sender.

I started using the CindyHartman@Remax.net when I switched to Remax, because I like the Remax branding (after all...I'm paying for it) but I also use Cindy@HomesBuddy.com (my website) and about 3 others (gee wiz I can't remember exactly what they are right now ) and also my personal verizon.net account.  I have them all forwarded to my Outlook as well.  But what I really find funny sometimes are the agents who use a hotmail address.  And in my area, a lot of agents do.  sounds a little racey...

Velda...I like your logo! Since you already have a domain it would be easy to set up your email as Velda@abileneareahomes.com. The use of your email this way will get your domain name much more attention and possibly more visits to your website. Why not?

Great post Candice!

I have my url e-mail forward to my hotmail that way it looks professional and is easy to check. I know when I see a company with a gmail, hotmail, etc... I wonder how good they really can be without their own url.

Candace, I am set-up (more or less) as Gene put it. But you know any email account is better than none at all? I use nate@natecovington.net (maybe a little to much?) But many agents here in my area actually do not have their own laptops let alone a domain name, or even their own email account.  I am just glad that there are people out their that do!

I too know many people that use just the aol, gmail or whatever address.  I don't think customers mind too much, it's what they use and are used to.  I think it only bothers us professionals.  :)

I have my @mipeco.com e-mail address but haven't been using it much lately ... I have it at P2 and the spam filters drive me crazy ... it filters out just about everything, including my faxes, etc. So I have just recently started using my old sbcglobal.net address. Not by choice but at least I know I'm getting all the mail.

I agree with Cyd.  I never hear anyone talking about it other than real estate agents. Like I said, 10 years and I haven't had a bit of trouble. I haven't had trouble with people remembering it either.  The only trouble I've had is making sure that people use the number 2 instead of the word to.

Another point about having your personal domain...I use different email addys to track marketing. For example - in 1 print magazine I use buy@lauraparris.com, if it's the newspaper it's info@, if it's a billboard it's help@ because that relates to the theme of the billboard and if it's the TV Market Report it's tv@. I also use different emails for REO@ and HUD@ etc. They are all forwarded to my main email but I can still tell where they come from and track my expenses. This has definitely helped me put my money where it is most effective.

My p2 email is my company email as are most of my blog and networking sites.
