Networking: Increasing the Diameter of your Sphere of Influence

Family, friends and past clients are all great sources of prospects and/or referrals.

But what about the less obvious?  In the past, I've noted some personal success with the following sources:

  1. Health Club and Athletic Teams
  2. A Volunteer Organization (Board of Directors)
  3. Local Chamber of Commerce
  4. Professional Associations (other than Real Estate)
  5. School and Former Employer Alumni

The common thread with each of these was my regular participation with each of these groups allowing me to indirectly cultivate my personality and skill sets without sounding like an over-bearing salesman, which is something I am not good at (probably because I HATE doing it).

Do you have any alternate Networking sources that have proven successful to your business?  Please share.

Carl,

I am so glad that you posted this because it reminds all of us computer geeks to get our noses from behind the puter screen!

I’ve had luck by accident with some networking. I volunteered with Junior Achievement, Big Brothers / Big Sisters and was a Coach for my daughter t-ball team and they all have brought me a least one sale. I did the Big Brother and Junior Achievement stuff 10 years before I was even in Real Estate. So I guess volunteer and get rewarded for it is my advice.

We've recently been trying to expand our sphere. Chris is great at it. I struggle. I've started talking to just about everyone I meet. Not all turn into a contact, but many do. When I frequent a business and talk to a business owner, I take a card and send a note thanking them for their personal service. I then be sure to return for more service and to build that relationship. The power of a personal note is incredible. Not many people take the time any more in this age of e-mails and blogs.
