Realtor without a Cause

By: Carl Minicucci, BBA CA

I've always done things a little differently in my life.  To be sure, I'm a very curious and skeptical person by nature.  I question things.

Do I do this for the pure joy of it or to rock the proverbial boat?  Am I another Realtor without a Cause?

Absolutely not.  I just believe in continuous improvement and self-realization and challenging others to do the same.  My approach to the Real Estate agency industry is no different.  By most generally accepted standards of the industry, I would surely make the Blacklist of Non-Conformists

Allow me to showcase some of my bio:

  1. Fact: I am still relatively new to the industry (I'm approaching 2 years)
  2. Fact: At this stage, real estate agency is not my primary means of income
  3. Fact: I am not associated with a larger national brokerage (I'm one of only 3 Realtors in our office)
  4. Fact: I don't own a pager or have access to dedicated real estate office administrators
  5. Fact: My photo is not on my business card, I don't subscribe to any regular mail outs or other similar traditional advertising campaigns

Pretty pathetic huh? Are you "Boo'ing" or "Hiss'ing"? Have I lost your respect as a fellow Realtor?  I hope not because I seem to note that kind of reaction on occassion.

Certainly, much of the self-promoting marketing material I read in my neighbourhood speaks to many of the above issues.

  • "I've been practising real estate for xx years"
  • "I'm a full-time Realtor"
  • "I'm part of xyz real estate inc., the largest real estate organization in the world, indeed the universe"
  • "I'm part of team, which includes buyer agents, listing and marketing personnel etc."
  • "I will market your property on national newspapers and directmail campaigns etc."

It's interesting how some Realtors are very quick to inherently dismiss someone like myself by focussing their self-promotion on everything they are, or are not.

The fact of the matter is that there is a lot more to me and my professional background than meets the Realtor eye and I harness this background to my clients' advantage each and every opportunity I get.

I'm not sure where this ideology eminates from but it's probably not too distant from all the other rhethoric and myths that some Realtors maintain or feel compelled to follow from the get-go.

Isn't it ironic that on the one hand, there are so many people so willing, ready and anxious to follow along the same textbook path of Realtor righteousness.  Yet, on the other hand, many of these very same Realtors are then desperately fledgling along in a desperate attempt to distinguish themselves from their own colleagues.

They want to be different, but not set the trend.  They want to explore, but not leave the Mothership. They want to belt out a tune like Elvis, but not outside the confines of their showers.

The professional associations and career choices they make is their business and their business only.  The environment you select, the goals you choose and how you set out to achieve them is entirely up to you.  What may work for someone, may not work for someone else.

Only, the Realtor can and should decide.

Carl, it's fairly common in commercial practice to not have photo on business card. Perhaps that will become your 'niche'  . . . :)

Aside from that, I have no blacklists except for mediocrity and you sure aren't on it judging from the above!

As long as I can't tell your parttime, by not doing your end of the business and being hard to get ahold of.. I don't care how you manage your business.  When it impacts me and my client, then I care!!

That's my feeling exactly Shelly.

In my case for example, I'm not what some would assume to be the case when the word "part-time" is tossed around.

Most people would envision someone who holds a traditional 9-to-5 job working for someone else.  I just happen to be self-employed (like you essentially) but in more than one endeavour (perhaps also like you).

I know a few people here that earn income from multiple sources which includes website design and coaching.  Does that make them part-time Realtors?  I would say not.  More importantly, I think that it probably enhances their service level.

In the end, as you correctly suggest Shelly, it's about knowing when you can and cannot take on a client and service that client with a level of care that's to be expected of a professional.  As far as I'm concerned, that applies to 'full-time' Realtors as much as it does 'part-time' Realtors.

If having more than one business or income stream is part time, I'm part time. Truth is, I'm full time x about 4. You almost have to be if you have the entrepreneur thing 'down'.

Carl, I'm right there with you. I've had my license over two years, but not by much. I'm not a 'full-time' realtor, for two reasons. 1) I have children, one not in school yet, and 2) I have a book contract with three books due in the next two years. My husband, who is also a realtor with less than two years behind him, makes most of our money, but from a different business. I work for a small neighborhood company with ten or so agents, and we don't have photo-cards, either. Like you, I don't have a pager, and I don't even know what a dedicated real estate office administrator is. I carry less listings and do less transactions than someone who has more time to devote to tracking down leads, but I treat all my clients professionally and do my best for them. Just like the rest of you, I believe that quality and not quantity is what makes a professional a professional. In fact, my husband and I frequently try to sell people on the idea that the fact that we have more time to devote to them and their buying or selling needs than a more experienced, busier agent, is a benefit. Some people seem to see it that way, altogether too many don't, unfortunately. Anyway, great post!

Candice, my books are the first three in a series about a New York designer turned renovator. They'll be published by Penguin/Putnam's mystery imprint, Berkley Prime Crime, starting in November next year. (I have to write them first!) They're light-hearted, funny, romantic mysteries along the lines of what authors Donna Andrews, LeAnn Sweeney and Nancy Martin write, if you're familiar with them. Some humor, some mystery, some historical intrigue, some renovating tips; nothing gory or scary or even hard to read. What they call 'cozies' in the mystery field. Light on literary merit, but hopefully fun and entertaining. That's what I'm aiming for, anyway. We'll see what happens.

YOU GO GIRL! I envy anyone with the stick-to-itiveness to complete a book. It is definitely not easy.

Thanks, Candice! No, it's not easy to complete a book. It's fun, though. And I can't wait to see it in the stores, with my... not name, exactly, but my pseudonym on it!

I have 2 books I have been working on for the better part of the last 10 years, and I just cannot apply myself. I can write shorts and articles all day long but . . . it is really a talent and a skill to write entire books--let alone a series of them! You'll have to let us all know when they hit print date.

I could never find the time, patience or dedication to ever write a book.  I have enough trouble writing short blog pieces.

The big problem I have is I get bored with the story and switch it midstream, then I have to go back and change the storyboard and forget a spot . . . LOLOLOL
