Time Shares

What is your opinion on time shares?  We recently visited Gatlinburg, Tennessee and we were "bribed" to attend a presentation on the Westgate resort that is there.  I didn't get it..thought it was too much money, didn't like the "resort' feel of it, just didn't get what the big deal was.  I know time shares aren't that big here in Canada but are huge in the United States.  And people seemed to be buying into the idea in droves.

What can you guys tell me about time shares and about Westgate?

I own two time shares one in North Carolina and one in Maryland. They are my golf escapes one in in May and the other in November.

I went online to purchase these directly from the owners that way I did not sit and waste my time with the two hour sales pitch and pay way more for the place then I would of. You can still sign up for RCI package but without the hassle.

Try to look into newer timeshares the older ones which I have I had some assessments on this year but it was needed to update the rec rooms.

Good Luck

We own credits through WorldMark, which is a bit different in that we don't have to go to the same resort each time.  We have loved it!  These can be purchased online as well and usually for less than they are going for at the presentations.

Good Luck in you decision!

I have the RCI Points and have used them all over the place.  I have enjoyed all of the resort stays I have been at, and feel its good value.  I am not the type of traveller that wants to see the same place year after year, so the points are a good fit for me.  I was reeled in through the local home and garden show with a phone call offering me a free weekend at the home resort, and have been happy since.  I found that going in and seeing their pitch at the office was informative, and if you go in there and buy cash, you can get some GREAT extras and a discount.

Let me rephrase that, not get, negotiate.

My husband has a time share for a ski resort in Colorado - and hasn't used it in at least 10 years -- where can you SELL a time share besides e-Bay that the company doesn't want $$$$ upfront and never delivers?  I'd love to know - would like to sell it.

I own a timeshare at Westgate in Gatlinburg, by the way I do hope you enjoyed your stay.   Timeshares are unique.  We own a floating RED week, that means you can stay anytime of the year any week of the year (the catch) if there is an opening.  Because we are Westgate owners we are also involved with Interval International, nightmare nightmare.  I have got 7 weeks banked right now but I cannot get in anywhere that I need to go.  I use mine as business expense so when we go to conventions etc... I can TRY to use them.  You can also buy a fixed week where that is the only week you get to use and of course there are the seasons.  If you need to know more call me.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback.  We actually weren't interested in the time shares and have no intention of ever investing in one.  I was just curious if they were something people liked and found useful.

Looks like there are both pros and cons.

I have a deeded week at Los Abrigados in Sedona. It is the most beautiful place and the location is splendid. You can shop and see a week's worth of stuff barely leaving the grounds.

We have gotten a lot of use out of it in the past and I love it to the max.

But the past 2 years since we've had Luna we have not gotten any use out of that resort because they're not pet friendly.  So if ANYONE wants to take this one off my hands, I would sell it for 500 bucks. The maintenance fees are 530 per year. We paid 9k. Holler.  :)

And for any wanting to sell their timeshare, do NOT go thru the companies that want upfront fee. Cindy is right. They do not deliver.

So, what is the bottom line if you want to sell you timeshare?  Do you call a realtor or place a classified ad?
