The Hardest Part of My Job Is..........

By: Cathy Clark

..........keeping my flipping mouth shut!  I find that it's the most difficult part of being a Realtor, friend, a spouse, an ex-spouse, a boss, an employee and, especially, a parent.  Add on your own.

I've had to bite my tongue so many times today that I'm spillin' blood from the mouth. I'm tired from the effort, both personally and professionally.

When have you had to "stifle" and when didn't you, and why?

i try not to anymore...it is easier on my to just say, but at the same time it is all about how you say it. I get my point across in the most delicate of ways, but making sure they understand...but i hear where ya comin' from!

Cathy, great. What is wonderful for me, is I should have never ended up in a customer service position in the first place, because I am so quite and shy. Family is amazed at that. But found out later it works for me. I am quite and shy. They have to sell themselves. Heehee.

I do try. I know I said the wrong thing to the folks here last week visiting. They were looking more at environment and atmosphere than the house. Well, I opened my mouth and said a few things that now that I think back, should have kept the mouth shut. Silence is best policy. Let them discover on their own. What I am trying to say, is I have done well being quite, and when I think I should speak up, wrong.

It was little things, like local restaurants. I said some wrong things about that and come to find out they eat out most days. Hard to explain, but from now on............

to comment on another question that was posted earlier today....in my other lifetime, I ran an inn. At that inn, I had some guests, E-I-E-I-O! Among those guests was Jean Stapleton - the real Edith Bunker - she knew when to stifle!

The older I get the easier it is, Ask yourself this question: Is it worth the minor satisfaction I will derive from having my say? or from saying I told you so?

Karen, my first "real" job (with insurance, which meant a "real job" at the time) out of school was front-line customer service for BCBS.  My mother looked at me and said, no lie, Fhat the Whuck?  YOU can't do THAT!  Be tactful? Hold your tongue?  Be NICE to people who aren't being nice to you?  AArrggg!  Are you sure you want to do this?

I wasn't shy, and that was, in and of itself, a problem.  Or so my Mom thought.

I was good at it.  Very good.  Extremely good, if I do say so myself.  My Mom was amazed when I continued to come home with awards for Service.  That was when my Uncle Bill said, "You shouldn't be in Service, you should be in Sales".  Took me a long time, but I found the way to combine the two.

Excellent point, Anna!  Which is why I've been stifling all day.  Stifling does take it's toll, though.

My family has learned "the look," so words aren't necessary.  With clients, I just tend to look at them and smile.  If they're being stupid, I look at them and smile.  If they're being rude, I look at them and smile.  If they're being enthusiastic, I look at them and smile.  If they ask me a question, then I speak.

The look. that sounds good. I will go with the look.

Its like the song. Know when to hold em, know when to fold em.

Same goes. Like the other post, none of us are perfect, we will make our mistakes, we kick ourselves, but bottom line we are good at what we do or we would not be here. I love your personality Cathy, have watched you on this blog for a while and listened. You are good at what you do and you know your stuff.

And you knew it wasn't me, right Candice?  lol....

I do tell myself, He who speaks first loses.  It is a little mantra in my head... Try it Cathy, it really helps.

I should go add that to the thought of the day thread.

LOL Shelly . . . I am so known for being chatty, when I am quiet and I can be very quiet, it is ominous.

I'm just thinking . . . and there's a lot of space in there for echoes . . . LOL

A saying I learned from a native in the Bahamas....

If de Fish don open 'e mout, 'e don get caught!

LOL...

I usually speak my mind, find a tactful way to say what needs said,  except with clients are are know it alls, lowballers, (and some FSBO's)...  I tell them how things work, and let them lead themselves into trouble if they insist.  Then I offer to rescue them.  Works fairly well, and better than just verbally blasting away at first opportunity : )

The hardest part of the job is sometimes finding a way to spin a problem into an opportunity - especially when the problem is coming from a bank.

Situation:  Loss Mitigation Dept says.... We have not assigned your case to a manager yet, and we cannot find the documents you say you sent... Can you send them again?

Natural Response:  (First I want to choke somebody, then I want to say burst out... why in the bleep can't you find a 60 page book that I sent you)

Opportunity in disguise (this person has a serious problem with lost documents that I might be able to help her with)

Professional response:  Gosh, I would love to send that stack again, but those were all originals, just like your forms said, so I am sure they are there somewhere.  Perhaps they are in the office DHL Overnight Express delivers to?  Can you send somebody to look?  I will call you back tomorrow to see how you made out...  In the mean time, is there anything else I can do to help you with this particular case?

Thanks Karen, and everyone else!  I'm doing better today.  It's 1:00 EST and no other shoes have dropped.  I've been very quiet, tactful, compassionate, and smilin' all the way!

They day, however, is still young.  Not being a pessimist, just a realist.  Maybe if I go take a nap.  Nah.

Glad I didn't take that nap!  A woman I haven't seen in two years emailed out of the blue.  Wants to upgrade.  Showed her a house, she wants it.  Going to take a look at hers at noon!

Awesom, Cathy!  I had a call out of the blue yesterday, too.  Someone from CA that I was showing houses 2 years ago.  He'd ended up buying a really expensive new construction view condo through site agent and is now wanting to sell it.
