Impact of Casinos Outside NV & NJ

By: Cathy Clark

Here in MA we are struggling with the Casino issue.  The Town on Middleborough, about a 1/2 hour north of Cape Cod, is the proposed site.  They're having a Town Meeting today to vote on the issue.  As I'm sure you can imagine, it's neighbor vs. neighbor and the discussions (yelling matches in some cases) are quite heated.  The town is a pretty sleepy residential community that has experienced quite a bit of growth over the past few years, but nothing like this.  I wonder about the effects on jobs, housing, crime, etc.

I know Connecticut has dealt with this.  Any insight Dan on the impact locally?  Has anyone else experienced this?

We have three casinos in Detroit (MGM Grand, Motor City, and Greektown) which opened I think in 1999, or 2000 and one Casino to the South in Windsor, Ontario which opened around 1998. Alot of people were worried about crime etc... I have not witnessed any of that, I have only seen positives good paying jobs, extra tax money to the City. The three in Detroit are getting ready to open their permanent structures with high rise hotels they have been operating out of very nice temporary buildings one casinos temporay is a converted bread factory from the 1920's. It has worked out great here and glad we have them.

Kathy, Casinos may bring jobs, but at the expense of the week people who think that if they win that will solve there problems. I am against all these casinos I'll never be convinced if you follow the money the mob is involved behind the scenes. They have just gotten the good town folks to be there ligimate front. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Roger

Yes, to Casino's

In general the CT casinos have been a boom to the CT economy with jobs etc.

CT gets 25% of the slot machine revenue which amounts to approx. 20 million dollars a month from the 2 casion's Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun.

That's approx. 240 million a year into the State Budget.

I'm not sure where it all goes but it's been good. Casion's have brought interest in Southern Eastern CT and a large theme park and movie studio was proposed near there but it's in limbo right now.

VOTE YES, and your taxes should go down if you cut the right deal.

Competition is Good, let them build and the area should prosper.

Look at Atlantic City and see that its a lot better than it use to be,

Good Luck, only play what you can afford to lose :-)

Cathy, I am thinking that your area is quaint and serene and has alot of history and neat places to visit. I think alot of people like growth but just because you grow doesn't mean you have to take on everything going. Wichita Kansas not far from me is discussing this right now too. I don't think Wichita has any quaintness that would be lost with a casino but also people can't actually show proof of the revenues helping when the police department has to grow to keep up with the new type of people coming in.

Actually, Dan, I was in AC last year.  Surrounding area was really depressed and crime-ridden. Lock your doors until you get to the valet!  I haven't heard this about CT, though, which is why I was so interested in your thoughts.

Thank you, all.

I havent' even had an opportunity to find out how the vote turned out....Going there now.

Cathy, Atlantic City was much worse then it is now. You are right about the immediate surrounding area. It looks bad but the casino strips are very well patrolled. Also, you have million dollar homes just a few miles away.

I go there about six times a year and stay off the casino strip with no problems.

Cathy: I guess Emil is the expert on AC because he goes there quite often, I don"t. I just remember how it use ti be and all my friends tell me how its come a long way from the 1980's.

This is a hot button issue, there's two sides to these stories and everyone has valid reasons for and against. CT continues to rack in over 240 million dollars a year fromits 2 casino's ..... ask the CT Gov. and State Rep's what they think, they would do without the money from casino's and let's not forget the State lotteries. If your State has a lottery why not have casino's?

When I'm elected President,:-)

you'll be able to put Casion's on every street corner you want and let the strong survive.....the consumer wins. Casino's are a supply and demand business ...sound familar. Without demand for Casino's they will not survive no matter how many they build.

Good Luck....... beat with your head not over it!

Hi, Cathy!! You know I'm only 35 minutes from Ceasars Atlantic Ciy. I worked there for a short time as the property book accountant. Yuck! Anyway, Atlantic City today is great! There is a very bad corridor leading into the city called  "Blackhorse Pike." If you go straight in off of the Expressway, it is like looking at the Emerald City. I know the casino business has helped the city that was know for its 3Ps, Palm Readers, Prostitutes, and Pizza prior to their arrival. Crime was bad there. The Casinos are not a cure all, but for Atlantic City it has helped bring it back from the dead. I don't gamble, but there are great shows and things to do there now. I love it (but wouldn't move any closer).

The vote was an overwhelming "Yes" but it still has to go through the legislature.  I think it's pretty much a done deal, though.  The Tribe has already purchased the land.

Being so close, I think it will be good for property on the Cape.  People who work there but don't want to live in shadow will go to surrounding areas.

We shall see!

There are TONS of Casinos in Arizona (Lots of Native American reservations here). They have pumped a tremendous amount of money into the Native American communities.

I grow weary of all the advertising -- billboards, busses, radio ads, etc -- but not much I can do about it.

I don't know what the states split is, but they say it helps keep taxes low. There is no question that the "quality of life" on the reservations has improved dramatically since the casinos started.

I wouldn't want one in my back yard, simply because of the traffic they generate. I feel bad for those with gambling problems who get sucked into them. But I don't think they should be illegal because of that. Using that argument, bars should be illegal because they make it difficult for alcoholics....
