Make a Difference! Be a Good Citizen and REALTOR®

The primaries are open us, and national, state, and local elections are up for grab.  All of this in a year where our industry has so much to be concerned about.  So many of us are out here in cyberspace, complaining about a down market and increased taxes, but how many of us are registered to vote, and ACTUALLY do vote?

It is a sad note to consider that more votes may be cast for American Idol this season than in a national election.

Also, are you making your voice heard?  When was the last time you wrote to one of your representatives?  Or called your local planning office?   Do these people even know who you are?  Make yourself and your concerns known!  One tip, be polite and professional.  Just as in this business it gets you a lot further, it will also further your concerns.

On this same note, have you made your contribution to RPAC?  This non-partisan political action committee is our industry's best tool in my opinion.  Your money is divided up on a local, state, and national level, which will make a difference in your business.  Trust me, I have seen it, especially in the battle against local and state transfer taxes, and also in the new national housing economic stimulus package. I personally know that for every dollar I have donated, it has helped me to save thousands more back.  And has put money back into the pockets of the homeowners and buyers we serve.

BEFORE the primaries is the absolute best time to have your contribution to RPAC make the most impact.  Many local races in particular are decided in this election and not necessarily in the general elections in the fall. REALTORS® are under constant threat of sales tax on your commissions, higher taxes on your business, and increased real estate taxes, but many of those elected officials are chose this time of year!

I am very proud that RPAC is the #1 PAC in North Carolina.  I hope it also is in your state. To donate in NC, please go to http://www.ncrealtors.org/extranet/rpac.cfm after you put in your user name and password.  Make sure to designate your local association so the local portion will be returned to your area.

I always vote no matter how large ar small the issues. This year is huge...major issues this time around! It is interesting to hear all the promises through my children's perspective. I have an 11 year old son and 13 year old daughter. My daughter is really interested but is still so young and trusting she thinks these politicians can actually, quickly deliver on each and every promise. I don't have the heart to tell her otherwise. I want her to stay interested in the process.

Lori, RPAC is far from non-partisan.  They gave a blank endorsement to Bush and his so called stimulus package. They support every interest cut by the fed that has almost no bearing on the cost of borrowing money for mortgages today, but has created run away inflation. They have backed every tax cut while watching the national debt grow. To endorse any Political Action Committee is like declaring al-Qaida is just a religious organization. They are our enemy and the problem with American Politics today. John McCain had it right but couldn't do anything about the deep corruption because he was too late to stop it. Give RPAC nothing. Their interest is not that of the United States.

I am sure Greg meant to add “in his opinion” to his rhetoric. I think if any political action group supports your ideals and agenda for the future than by all means support them. However, the most power that you have is the power of the ballot box and the written word delivered to your representatives.

So Lori, your message is a good one and one that even Greg could learn from, for if he feels as strongly as his message, his written words should be directed at those he has found less than correct in their decisions.

Greg actually is a nice guy but may be off his Med’s today! He is a die hard Liberal and has some foundation in his anger with the waste and economic conditions that our country is in at the present time. He should look harder at cutting cost, as a solution rather than removing tax reductions. Prosperity will come from fewer taxes and less government, not more of either. You see, the government doesn’t create a job that is done in the private sector. If you take the money from them and give it to the government you create nothing but a bad economy. So, perhaps you need to add to your list that we should all try to become better informed of how our economy grows. It isn’t taught very well in schools and it something that is very misunderstood by some of the brightest people.

Gary, your are a man of wisdom and tact in your deliver. However, these "special" interest groups are killing us (as in U.S.). Here in the great state of New Jersey there have been many attempts to cut costs only to fall on the ears of the insane. Meds will not help them see the errors of their ways.

Once they voted out the guy who said we have a financial problem. No one would let him cut any spending. The "new" girl stole the money from the state workers pension system to "balance" the books. Now we have a guy who said we can cut services, sell off the infrastructure, and raise the sales tax. The "government" is now passing a "family leave act" that is going to cost billions allowing workers to stay home and get 3/4 pay.

I may be crazy, Gary. But, the government is responsible for our infrastructure and it is in need of repair and maintenance. George Bush should be spending our tax dollars on that and not sending out a few dollars of freshly printed, inflation causing, money for us to buy things made in China (in my humble opinion).

George's father had it right - "VOO DOO Economics" too bad he didn't have the backbone to stand by his words.

And, disagree with you - the government does create jobs when it invests in the infrastructure. Today the only jobs it is createing are politics and military. Let's not support RPAC.

honestly, I can't stand to see RPAC fees being added to our regular Board bills each year. Sure, we have the option to opt out ... if you're careful enough to notice it's part of the bill. It should be the politicians job to do their best for the people, why should we pay extra for it?

I always deduct the TREPAC from my dues. No way will I pay it. I used to get bothered all the time by the PAC people. I finally told them that there is no way that I'm going to provide money to an organization that endorses or monetarily supports candidates that I will not vote for.  I don't base my political choices on one topic.  There is more to life than real estate.  I could not in good conscience vote for a candidate just because he/she supported real estate issues if everything else they stand for is against my philosophy.  It has never made sense to me that I would give money and support to an organization who is trying to get a candidate elected who is trying to defeat the guy or gal that I'm going to vote for.

I guess we have a lot to do to educate even our own membership!

Yes Greg, NAR endorsed RPAC to give money to George Bush, but have you checked your local and state elections?  I just about guarantee that many of the candidates that received RPAC monies were Democrats, and probably some independents here and there, too.

Think about it, one of our #1 priorities is to promote fair and affordable housing, and we know which party often helps us in that fight!  And even I know that and I'm a Republican!

And since some of you don't seem to want to protect our industry, and the "Great American Dream," I am even prouder of my support of RPAC and what it does for our industry.  If let up to agents like you, we'd ALL be out of a job!!!!

Lori Bee, you didn't need to declare your party - it was evident in the original post. John McCann had it right about PAC's but caved in to the pressure only to pass a worthless bill that addresses nothing. John was also right about the Bush tax cuts but had to yeild to the party's base.

How come I don't hear the Bush Administration waving the flag about the number of home ownership being "up" anymore? Maybe the smoke and mirrors used to put people into houses they can't afford has cleared up? If the NAR was doing the job that you claim, this type of game would not have been possible. You support who you want and I will continue to support "None of the Above."

I honestly think all parties have their positives and negatives, which is why I never vote along party lines, but ISSUES, which is what our PAC strives to do, and why I am such a fan.

I don't disagree with much of what you have said Gregory other than I am glad that RPAC exists to fight for our industry, and not to promote one party over another.

And by the way, I originally was a Democrat when I first registered to vote back in 1988.  :-)
