THE SMALLEST PACKAGE

By: "Dee" Mayers

The smallest package in the world is someone who is wrapped up in themselves.  I heard that today and I thought some agents are guilty of being caught up in themselves way too much.  Granted we do have to toot our horns somewhat but going to the extreme is too much.  Don't you think?

Dee, that is a very compelling thought. But, in my small mind, it "is all about me!" So, what was that an insult?

Dear Dee,

What is extreme to you, may not be to me. In this business who is else is going to toot if I don't?

Dee, I don't believe that many agents that last in this business profess the level of pride turned to arrogance that would put them in a category of doing anything more than tooting.

Girls don't toot. LOL

Seriously, I think if an agent can't self-promote capably, how can they be expected to market for their clients?

I agree that one might 'jump the shark' if they make it ALL about 'me me me me' and where is Gumba with his meme vid when you need him?

But still, a HUGE part of our jobs as agents is to market. Ourselves, our services and our clients.

This is what I mean by going to the extreme, While you should promote yourself, avoid going to the other extreme by ignoring your “real value.

Promote yourself as you really are, don’t make the mistake of promoting the illusion of being the best or the top producer when you are not.

It is not improper to want to maintain our personal reputation, or to succeed in this business, it's when you think more of yourself than is necessary that causes problems.

I agree, Dee.

There could conceivably even be an ethics violation in claiming to be a 'top producer' or 'number one sales' if it is not factual.

**Article 12 - REALTORS . . . shall present a true picture in their advertising, marketing, and other representations.**

In risk reduction class, we're warned against calling ourselves as 'specialists' unless possessing a verifiable specialization.

We see this along the River a lot. Agents calling themselves 'waterfront specialists'. More to it than just typeset on a magazine page! Need to know about ACOE specs, dock requirements, sea walls, water levels, etc.

The bottom line is the five most important words in our business, or really IN business are "How can I help YOU?"

I think the public can see thru 'hyperhype' anyway and it tends to backfire.
