SKYPE - VOIP

Are any of you using Skype?  A couple days ago I downloaded their software and quickly discovered that my microphone headset was acting up.  I could here the test message just fine but Skype could not hear me.  I adjusted the volume settings, made sure the microphone was not on mute, etc.  No luck.  So I bought a Linksys phone for Skype.  Before opening the box I cruised around and learned there are other options besides the phone.  There is a special Motorola bluetooth over the ear piece with the USB part for $90 ($50 on Ebay), there is also a phone adaptor which, I guess, converts the regular cordless phone to work with Skype.

If you are using this service would you mind sharing your experience with it and what hardware you finally settled on.  Are you really happy with Skype and have you found unique ways to use it in your marketing?   Once again, thanks in advance for sharing.  Looking forward to reading your comments.

I used Skype for personal calls, and for calls when I'm home. I have the netgear wifi phone which is great. One problem: calling extensions doesn't seem to fly unless you dial it from the computer program using your mouse.

That's been my experience.

It's Vonage for me.  Fax and Phone 2 line hookup came with a wireless router, all in one package.  Works.  Costs less than the phone company.  But I guess Skype is free? Is that right?

Hi Lonn,

Skype is free if the other end also has it.  There is a rate sheet for all calls including international ranging from a couple cents to in the 20's or 30's.  They have an unlimited US/Canada plan for $30 per YEAR - that's pretty good.  My hangup is phone vs bluetooth vs adaptor.

What did you pay for your package?  I would certainly take Vonage over Brighthouse.

I use sunrocket both for fax and phone calls. Prior to them I used Vonage. Both are great and never had any problems.

Thanks Ritu - I'm looking into SkyRocket now, I like their global plan.  Are you satisfied with the quality of the connection and do you use their phone adaptor.  They offered me a phone as well.  What to do-what to do!!

Thanks for the input.

2nd post - first one never showed up

I've learned that it's always worth a moment to google companies for customer satisfaction. For instance, try "Vonage complaints" or "skyrocket complaints". Someone at the AG's consumer advocacy office says one company is at the top of their telecommunications complaint list by a mile, but I don't know specifics. You'll want to check it out. Good phone service is critical to our biz.

OMG - it looks like my hunt is just starting.  Thanks to Diana I found a bunch more that have 5 star ratings.  Not good for me, give me a choice of more than 1 and it becomes a project.  I don't recalling ECR on the list that was reviewed.  A big thanks to everyone for all the direction pointing.  Anyone know of JOI, VoipYourLife,CallCentric or Cordia.  These all have 5 star ratings.

I used Skype for a while but when I couldn't get the service to take payment for the unlimited service, I stopped using it.

Sounds like you hooked up with a Customer Service DUCK instead of an EAGLE.  Why not try again, I'm hearing Skype is pretty good.  I did download the little program but my headset is acting up, receives great, transmits very badly. Any ideas?  I checked all the volume settings and can't see anything wrong.  The headset is not old, but that doesn't mean it can't have a loose wire.
