Prospect Email or Spam? - How do you Know?

By: Gail MacMillan
Friday, May 23, 2008 8:30 AM

I get my share of these, but they are now so clever that they're hard to just blow off as spam.  I ran this one through the international phone books and checked on www.snopes.com.  Nothing came up on either the name or the number.  The country code is confusing because of all the international mobile phone extensions.  Did anyone else get this and how did you handle it?  I'm sure many foreigners are interested in Florida investments; I'm equally sure the spammers could have a field day with a response.  This came in via Point2NLS, shouldn't they be on the lookout for spam going out to the membership!  Do any of you just go for it and reply.............and what happened?

Gail, I get things like that everyday, and  I think for the most part they are Bogus.  However,  I did sell a property to some people from India.  They wanted to own a piece of the Oregon Trail.  If their email had been blocked by my spam blocker, I may not have met them and made the deal.

I say tread lightly!

I would go to a pay phone and spend the money to call the number from there. Ask for the good Doctor and listen for back ground noises such as phones ringing and people talking.

If it is a legit lead you can find out for 10-15 bucks and then make your contact the usual ways.

Just a Thought

Thanks all ~ I followed the link Velda mentioned and this is what came up.  Good site Velda!

<<This email lists mobile phone numbers. Use of such numbers is typical for scams because they allow criminals to conceal their true location. They can receive calls in an Internet cafe from where they send you emails, while pretending to be in some office.

+447031877566 (UK, redirects to a mobile phone in another country)>>

Lorne - Do you have the URL for the Phone Buster effort?  Is it something consumers can use like the site Velda supplied?  I could not find the website.

Nate - Was the tone of your India buyers' email similar to the scams we get all the time, or did it feel legit?

Mike - are there still pay phones out there ;-)

Great link Velda!  I have received a few emails similar to this one Gail.  I send an email in response.  Once they realized I wasn't going to help them with financing, open an account for them, they stopped communicating with me.  The last one was a response on one of my listings.  The gentleman wanted to buy it and move back to the US from the UK.  He wanted me to communicate with Barrister Tony.  That and his lack of knowledge of the English language, gave the whole thing away.  Not to risk a real client, I think email would be the safest course, after all we can always hit that delete button.

Hi Jana - This is interesting that you've actually responded to these emails.  Do you use P2 to send your response?   The reason I ask is that I always respond using my business email which means they would now have my email address, making me vulnerable to even more spamming.  So I just avoid responding even if I might be just a wee bit curious ;-)  Like Nate mentioned above there is always the possibility that one of them could be real.  Have you ever responded to the most obvious - the Nigerians - I think a lot of us would like to hear about your experience doing this.  Hope everyone has a fabulous Memorial Day Weekend.

Gail,

Basically it's going to be the same chance you get as if someone contacted you via your website.  you have a 50/50 chance it's a fake lead, however if you don't follow up you'll never know.  Could be a waste, could be something that'll be big for you in the future.  Just my 2 cents.

I suppose that if your curiosity gets the better of you, you could have a separate free account at hotmail or yahoo to use for responding to these suspect emails.  I would still be careful what you reveal until you know it is a legit prospect.

Hi Frank, thanks for your comment.  It's not the fake lead that worries me, it's the resulting spam.  There was a time when I was getting 500-600 spam emails a day.  It was awful!  Now I'm down to, maybe, 100 or so a day.  Much better.

Thanks Velda - great idea, I have a yahoo email that I never use, that would be perfect.  I think I'll go respond now :-)  BTW, I'm a feline caregiver myself and think what you do is wonderful..........big smiles!

OK - I did send an email from the never used Yahoo account so the spam will be easy to track....and I got a response.....these people must think we're idiots.  Here's what I wrote:

<Above is a copy of the email you sent me.  As you know we are inundated with spam in the real estate business, and as such, must take precautions against it.  It is always my pleasure to assist people with their real estate needs.  Please let me know what you are looking for in the way of an investment, how much you are looking to spend, would you be buying sight unseen or are you planning a trip over in the near future?  Where do you reside, would you need a mortgage (which could be difficult) or do currently have funds in the United States?  Let me know if I can help.  Sincerely>

DON'T YOU THINK THAT WOULD DISCOURAGE A SPAMMER.....THAT STUFF  MUST BE AUTOGENERATED!  But no, here's what I got back:

<<From: Dr Eng Kareem Daouda,Abidjan- Republic of Cote d' Ivoire

My Dear,

With utmost regards I crave your understanding of this proposal, I am Dr

Eng Kareem Daouda the Assistant Director for Ministry for works and

housing here in cote d ivoire west Africa (FMWH) my boss the Minister who

was injured by the heat of the political crisis here in my country Abidjan

and after some days, before he died in the hospital, he revealed to me the

whole process he has gone on finished payment of Contract workers and he

handed over to me all documents where he deposited (US$6 million Us

dollars) in the bank as the beneficiary contractor of the said company

(FMWH). I got a very recommendation of you and wish to propose this

business to you in a strict confidence.

I am seeking your assistance for the Telegraphic Transfer of six million

United States Dollars(US6,000,000) to your account for further private

investment purposes because my late Boss instructed me before he died not

to use the money to invest in this country Cote d'Ivoire that I should

invest abroad for the benefit of his wife and children and my very self.

This amount to be transferred was accrued from an over-invoiced contract

award for the construction of an underground telephone network to

replace the former in the new capital city(Yamoussoukro) and other major

cities also for installation of the microwave station awarded to my late

boss(RIP) in 2005 to expatriate companies.

The contract which was originally valued for Fifteen million united

states dollars (US$15,000,000.00) was manipulated to read Nine million

united states dollars (US$9,000,000.> 00).The extra six million US$6 was

deposited in a fixed deposit account by my late Boss which has expired

last month, this is what I want to be transferred to your account as the

beneficiary contractor due for payment. This contract has been completely

executed and the contractor has been paid all their bills completely. On

your interest to assist me in this transaction what I require from you,

your real name and your private phone and fax numbers for easy and strict

communication, Your bank particulars for submission to my bosses bank

where this money is to be remitted to your account. You shall arrange

for me to meet with you once this fund is been transferred in your own

account and confirmed by you.

On the successful conclusion of this transaction we will offer you 10% of

the total amount, We have also mapped out 3% for any miscellaneous

expenses that might occur in the process of this transfer, the rest will be

released to us when we get to your country. I have worked out all

modalities concerning the transfer of this fund, so in this transaction

you are required to treat it with the strictest confidence.

Thanks in Anticipation of your acknowledgement of this letter.

Note:This money is what i will use in buying the house i told you about

and i will also like us to go into partnership and buy houses and

reforbish them for resale with this funds to get good intrestHope to do

business with you and please keep all communiation as regards to this

I had a guy email me and wanted to buy a house.  He sent me an address and all.  It seemed pretty legit for a while.  Then he wanted my bank account info so he could deposit the funds to purchase the house.

He would call me at all hours of the day and night.  It was a huge long production.  But one thing I always noticed is that every time I talked to him on the phone, there was a LARGE delay.  This is because they were forwarding the phone call.  Hiding their true location.

Be very cautions.
