Internet based fax

By: Gary Morris
Saturday, June 28, 2008 9:52 AM

I know this has been discussed before, but I haven't seen any recent in depth discussions about it. I am considering doing away with all land lines in my home office and going strictly with cellular phone service. What internet based fax service do you use? If you care to mention them, what one(s) would you avoid and why?

I hope everyone is selling a lot and doing well. Thanks for your input and opinions.

I have a email base fax, and altough I love it, there are times when for what ever reason, it does not work and then I have to have it sent to a land line fax. There have been other situations when I needed it. So I would not get rid of it altogether....my opinion only.

I have used Trustfax for 3 years now.  Couple of odd quirks but nothing major.

Gary, I use Packetel's Fax Service. I combine that with my $2.00 a month toll free number and the two of them cost me about $6.00 a month. In most areas you will not need the toll free. However, there were no numbers available in my area. Packtel is $3.95 a month. Good program and has worked for me.

Just a few suggestions when you are comparing services.  Be sure to find out if the service is for both sending and receiving faxes, if there is a set number per month that you can send/receive for that fee, and if there is an additional fee should you go over that amount.  Find out if those additional charges are put on your credit/debit card automatically or if added only if you authorize it.  Another feature to check out is whether or not you have storage space on their server or if the fax is forwarded to your email without storing it.  I like the fact that Trustfax has storage space on their server in case there is trouble receiving emails so all I have to do is check my account online.  Do you need a toll free fax number or not?  The one I have from Trustfax is toll free but that didn't really matter that much.   I cannot receive faxes from international location.

I haven't had a land line for 10 years so when I opened my own company in 2005, I just couldn't see getting a land line for faxes.  That is what started my search.   Just can't tie me down :)

Sharp makes a Broadband fax machine you may want to consider it works great.  Also, you may want to look into www.magicJack.com for another phone line than your cell. It works of the internet like Vonage BUT is only $20 a year for service. $40 buys the jack and the first years service and it uses a "regular" phone.  Call quality is great, BUT they say it won't work for a fax.

Thanks Mandeep and John.

John, have you had any experience with Magic Jack? I have read in some forums that it doesn't play well with AT&T callers.

Hey Gary,

I just got my Magic Jack yesterday and hooked it up but being you asked about calls from a specific carrier I will comment.

I suspect it is unlikely that there would be issues with AT&T callers specifically - the reason for my doubt and faith it will straighten out quickly if the problem exists is that Magic Jack has contracted AT&T as there exclusive long distance provider - so technically when you are calling via Magic Jack at least past the initial exchange you are an AT&T caller yourself.

Hope that helps our somewhat. So far call quality is very good, my only complaint so far is minor and it's simply regarding the level of compression on the voice mail my callers leave.

Our office is using MyFax and we love it.  We have about 20 agents that can send and recieve faxes either from the myfax.com web interface or from an email client such as Outlook or Outlook express.   It really is very handy and keeps contracts out of the office fax machine that anyone can see.  By purchasing it as an office, there is a cost savings, only about $10 per month for up to 200 pages sent and 200 pages received.

I forgot to mention that because we are not in a major metropolitan area, but in Central Maine, MyFax didn't have a local exchange for us, so for no additional cost to us, we all have toll free fax numbers.  Our clients and business associates appreciate that!

I have always used voip in our office ( a little over 3 yrs now) but I didn't sign up for the "business" plan since there are only 2 of us at any given time in the office at the same time.  I use ECR-Voice.
