Squirrels in the attic

By: Gloria Losie
Thursday, September 20, 2007 5:10 PM

We just finished the Home Inspection.  The Home Inspector surprised a squirrel in the attic.  He has been quite comfortable here for quite sometime.  The owners put poison out and this guy must avoid it.  My client is from out of the area and is quite uncomfortable with this situation.  I have had my day with these little varmits and it is a constant struggle.  I have cut the trees down around the house and had a trapper (yes they have such things) catch and release in a park.  Tried the poison and they died in the attic somewhere I couldn't find them but oh boy the smell.  Is there a safe tidy way of ridding yourself of these pesty squirrels?  Any one a specialist out there?

Does this equate to bats in the belfry?  I have those, too.

Screens at every opening but that still won't stop them.  They'll find a way in because of the heat.  It's inevitable.  You can keep out the big pests (racoons, etc) but not the teeny ones.  In the winter I hear them running above my ceiling all the time.  It becomes comforting after a while.  If I don't here them, I wonder where they are.

Well this may sound off the wall,

But you may or may not have heard of it.

Some experts and pest control people, have found out to drive out unwanted guest pest like in a chimney , atic, crawl space they use a boom box and blast the worlds worst music either in the attic, chimney etc acid rock seem to work best.

Gloria,

We had flying squirrels in our attic a few years back and hired a pest control person.  They came out, put traps in the attic and told us to keep them baited with peanut butter. For a while we kept hearing them in the attic (I think they were playing soccer at 3 am) then they stopped.  We kept checking the traps but never did trap any of them, they just moved on.

Ok, not squirrels, but my grandmother had possums that decided to bed in her house.  Now you have to picture your 80 something grandmother (over 275#) running from the kitchen because she found one under the sink.  She slammed and locked the bedroom door....locked because they could get in you know...jumped on the bed to call my dad.  My dad answered the phone with Gram  screamming and yelling "get out of here, get, go away, GET OUT OF HERE".  Well, my dad thought that someone had broke in.  This was all after 10pm.  So my dad called the police and raced to my grandmothers.  She had already locked you doors for the night.  When all got there they could here her screaming.  The police broke down the door, ran to her room and low and behold, FOUR possums hissing and growling like a HUGE cat.  She had cornered them in her room and they did not like it very much.

Now get this, the possum is Illinois state animal.  The possum is protected and they can not kill them.  They have to live trap them.  Gram stayed at our house for 3 weeks while animal control played games with the possum in her house.

We still call her possum Gram.

Oh Lordy!

We don't have trouble with squirrels, but with pigeons. They can get really cozy in attics especially in our golf course and lake/waterfront areas. They like being near the water.

To keep them away from rooftops, out of attics etc. there are spikes that can be used. They are metal or hard plastic spikes in sheets you can get at hardware stores like Ace, TrueValue et al.

You unroll the sheets, can trim or cut them to fit an area, and place them. Too uncomfortable to land there, shoos them off.

Could that possibly work for the squirrels too? If you can get the spikes into the small space?

I found out how to get rid of the guests!

Leave the  squirrels a "Post It Note" to vacate the attic they will understand that.

Ready for this one.......previous squirrel victims swear by it.  Go find yourself the largest plastic OWL that money can buy from your local home fix-it store and place in the attic. The squirrels run for the EXIT.

Good question Gloria I just look in my youtube/my space  folder, and if can find some sort of title/ word match then  I surf.

Videos really have many meanings you can hear  feel, and see the words of the performers, as they speak or sing and intrepid or include something that would or has taken place in our life and maybe not have.

To me singing is the healing force of the world.

Take this song for example, there was message in it, from the 80s Laura has past away and will be missed.

One of my clients had a big problem with racoons in his attic last year. They moved into a very tiny attic space where the owner couldn't get to them. Going along with Vances noise idea, I do believe they got rid of them with loud noise and once they got out, they boarded up even the smallest openings (other than covered vents). I don't think they've had any problems since.

To get squirrels out of your attic, check my new invention on ebay.  Search for squirrel attic repellent.  It's cheap and effective.

Okay, here is advice from a professional. Chris is a pest control technician by day. He says use a live animal trap baited with whole, unsalted peanuts. When you've caught the critter, seal any holes. Depending on the size of the hole, a wire mesh screen will work.

good luck!
