The cream always rises to the top

While watching the exciting golf tournament yesterday afternoon (of course, that may be an oxymoron to some) and attempting to get a listing agent to beat up his seller so that my buyer can “steal” their home at a lowball price, I was thinking about how many of us will deal with the immediate future facing us in the real estate profession.

Yes, homes will still sell and yes, buyers will still be able to obtain a mortgage, just in less numbers than during the heyday of a few short years ago. Many real estate agents who rushed into the market in the past few years to earn big, fast money will soon be rushing out to get paying jobs. The Post and Courier, Charleston’s daily newspaper highlighted this trend in Sunday’s paper.

In the days before homogenization, the milk bottle delivered to homes appeared to contain 2 different liquids, a thick yellow liquid (cream, the butterfat of milk) at the top and a thin white liquid (skimmed milk, the nearly fat free portion of milk) at the bottom. Even after shaking the bottle, the 2 layers would eventually separate and the cream would once again rise to the top.

I noticed that many of the finest players in the world were in contention during the golf tournament because it was the first event of the new FedEx Cup with lots of money at stake. They are the cream of the crop, the crème de la crème as the French might say and the best always wins or comes out on top. While Tiger didn’t play the first of four tournaments, does anyone really think he won’t win the inaugural event?

There has always been a business cycle and the world of business is truly based on British economist, Herbert Spencer’s phrase “survival of the fittest” based on Charles Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species”. During good economic times, even average companies turn a profit and grow but when the economy turns down, many flounder, lose money and go out of business. The best run businesses gain market share and grow even more profitable as the economy turns up once again.

As professional real estate agents, it is up to each of us to rise to the occasion, put our game faces on and survive and thrive during these difficult times and rise to the top.

The cream always rises, see you at the top!

And I will be there, Howard!

We have a saying at my office, "We don't want it all, just the BEST." I feel that way about providing service and selecting business, the push and the pull.

It works!

Good Morning Howard and Candice

That's an easy question to answer.

We should be back to our normal way of doing business a nice steady pace pretty soon.

I have already notice a difference in the market Howard, and Candice you also may have notice.

For a lack of better words it is the drop out rate that Realtors/Real Estate agents are leaving the business as I speak anyway, and its by the thousands. along with mortgage brokers sales associates.

This is a tradition in this business when the market turns downwards, so for those that are left we will have more to choose from.

In Florida the most popular thing to do is when people move there they either go after one two things a real estate license and a landscaping business. I believe we have in excess of 300k plus agents in FL.

This way if the real estate market turns down on them they will survive because the Grass Is Greener On The Other Side all they have to do is mow it.:)

So far I am still here.....

Vance

You guys are absoulutely right.  History tells us this over and over.  I am reading the book-Carnagie...its the biography about the steel magnate Andrew Carnegie.  Back in the early 1870's Carnegie writes about Spencer and how he truly believes in the Survival of the Fittest.  During this depression, he thrives while his partners loose their businesses and their fortune.  He claims he survived the depression by surrounding himself with the best men, cutting expenses and attaining more knowledge(reading and learning).

I plan on being here next year.  I hope to see you here too!

AMEN my gumba!

And I don't even have any GRASS!  But I do have palm trees and a drip system! (SERIOUSLY, it's all about working with the cycles rather than against them)

Well, Howard. In real estate (and other business) I have found that SCUM also rises to the top. I like when all the agents jump to the greener grass. No one told them that is where the spectic tank is buried.

I am only kidding with you. It is a beautiful day here at the Jersey Shore. Gas prices are $1.34 per gallon. Good reason to drive here and take a vacation.

PS. I can set you up in a summer rental.

I think it is better to live where millions take their vacation and many decide to stay. Thanks for your comments everyone and there is plenty of room at the top if you work hard to get there and stay there.

Howard remember those milk bottles and they were milk bottles. Actually use to deliver it. Nice post that is very true to the conditions that exist. This is not a time to try and coast since they is only one way you coast, so it is time to make yourself rise to the level necessary to survive at least!

Thank you all for stopping by and saying hi. By the way, Johns Island, 20 minutes from downtown Charleston is the second largest island on the Eastern Seaboard behind only Long Island NY and our local tomatoes are famous. One of the many reasons for the great food in the many fine dining choices in Charleston is the access to locally grown fresh produce and seafood.

She's very pretty but not much between the ears but a credit to our education system nonetheless. Thank God for Mississippi (which by the way has had more Miss America's than any other state).

I just have to chime in here in response to Gregory and Candice.  We primarily use litres for measuring gas (i.e. currently it's $1.09/litre), but I wanted to do the conversion to gallons to figure out what we pay in comparison to you US folks.  The result was:

$4.12/gallon

I started crying.

Jacquelyn, how strong is the Canadian dollar these days, is it fairly close to the American dollar, for many years, a dollar bought about $1.50 Canadian, I'm sure it is closer to even right now and of course, Canadian taxes are excessively high. Today's price in Charleston South Carolina, $2.49, don't cry, drive down and visit, fill your car back up and we have no winter weather like snow, brrrrr.
