Point2 Jumps Into the Facebook Fray!

By: Jeff Tomlin
Wednesday, July 18, 2007 4:13 PM

Facebook has become a facinating portal with nearly 30 million users and around 150,000 new users joining each day.  It's growth has exploded since it opened up back in September.  With the new platform facebook opened up, an exciting opportunity was created for developers to take advantage of powerful social media.

Point2 NLS just released a new application within facebook.com that allows you to identify the neighborhood you live in and see others that live around you. Not only that, but you can upload community announcements and photos of your area. See who is in your neighborhood now and see all of the Point2 listings in your neighborhood by adding this application http://www.facebook.com/.

You will need to be signed up as a registered Facebook member to play with this.  If you are not a member of the growing site, consider signing up - it's free, it's private, and its fun!

Let us know what you think.

Jeff

Good grief, you need a full time assistant to add yourself to all these websites, forums and networking sites.

Who has time to keep up?  You sign up on one and 5 more websites to join are created....LOL

I signed up a while back but never did anything to it.  I'll add it to my already mile long list of things to do.....

Thanks for giving me more work Jeff!!     ;)~

It's the "new" MySpace, Sharron.  Just ask any teenager.....or adult.

If we can get on this bandwagon early, it's an incredible opportunity.

Thanks, Jeff!  (like Bat Girl says....for adding into my list of things to do!)

You "guys" at P2 still rock.

I should note - we haven't built the bit that allows you to upload neighborhood photos yet, but it's coming soon.  I'm more than happy to heap on the work Becky!

Sharron/Steve - Facebook is a social networking site like MySpace, but WAY better.  Pages are nice a clean, consistently well formatted, easier to use and most importantly, they pay very close attention to privacy.  You can manage exactly who can see what you post and and receive notifications about your content.  In fact, we've never seen an application with as many privacy controls.  Lastly, Facebook is not overrun by spammers like MySpace and the way it's built, I don't expect it to be.

Yes, facebook is designed for one account for one person.  That will make more sense when you are in.

Don't worry Cathy, it's all good... :-)

The application errors might be an early bug.  This was just released this afternoon so we might know more in the morning.  Most feedback has been without errors.

Emil - Are you being serious (I can't tell!).  Other than thumbnails, you should only be able to see photos from your friends that you approve.

Richard, while you are partly right, the fastest growing user segment in Facebook is the 25-35 crowd.  That should be a valuable demographic.  Although I have the frame of a taut teenage Swedish boy, I'm am 35 years old - I know, I know, I fool a lot of people. But I can't believe the people that I've connected with - family, current friends and friends from the far past.  It's pretty remarkable how it works.

Anyway, the geographic information they use for locating people is sparce at best.  We think the neighborhood application will have legs and may provide some very valuable exposure for listings.  We'll wait patiently and see.

Facebook is FAR superior to MySpace. I've been on it for a couple of weeks.

"Neighborhoods" is a brilliant application for a social network.

And if you think social networks are a fad and are going away, think again. The kid that created Facebook was offered $1 billion dollars for it. That's Billion with a B.  And he turned the offer down.

A few years ago, people sad blogging was a fad that would go away. Before that, some thought the internet was a fad...

Back in my corporate days, I joined LinkedIn (another social network). I got two HR consulting gigs from it.

Social networks are here to stay.

Befriend me on Facebook! And join the Real Estate Bloggers group I started: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2429982544

Hey Jeff - my neighborhood is spelled wrong. It should be Holliday Farms, not Holiday Farms...

Clyde, welcome! We love geeks here because they are the only ones that can give us dummies answers. You will find this a good place for information and sometimes hot discussions. But by the next day we all calm down and life is back to normal. Point2 is by far the best. Not perfect but still the best. We move them closer to perfection every day and they tend to listen to our comments, most of the time.

Again welcome to your new home!

Jeff -

I signed up too and ran several searches for cities in my area.  Nothing.  Than searched for Michigan real estate and came up with several sites all under the category  Business - Real Estate that I prefer my profile not be by.  One contained the F-word and the slang N-word in the same line.

I'm with Emil - thanks, but no thanks.

Facebook won't be for everyone, just like many social networking sites and even wide open classified sites like Craigslist (You can find crazy stuff on CL).  But you don't have to dig around all those areas of the network.

It will be valuable for people like myself and Jay but I really do think that you should go into it with an open mind.  Our application was not built on a whim.  As I reiterated above, Facebook has 30 million users and it's growing exponentially.  An amazing fact about Facebook is that of it's userbase, over 1/2 of them log EVERY day.  It's got an incredibly loyal and adopted user base.  The secure privacy that's been developed encourages people to share more information.  That information will be used to create a very powerful advertising platform.

Here is a story from Canada's Globe and Mail with some great information on this growing platform:

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20070716.wgtfacebook16/BNStory/Technology/home

Right now, Facebook has a marketplace and one category is housing. We felt it's prudent to ensure real estate professionals have visibility in this open marketplace.

The application name is "Neighborhoods".  This link might work:

Tim/Susan - The app is used within Facebook so you have to login and then add the application either via the link above or searching it through the Applications link on the left hand side.

Check Brendan King's Friends. Don't mean to pick on Brendan, I just saw him and went into it.

Facebook is huge, and the applications and usage for it are as various as the 30,000,000 people using it. Yes, there are kids and fools there, but there are kids and fools everywhere. The way Facebook is structured, you can easily ignore them.

I admit I don't fully "get" social networking. But it isn't going away. The agent that can begin to understand and utilize the power of social networking is going to be way ahead of the learning curve. In just a couple of weeks, I've "met" a couple of new agents to add to my ever growing and developing referral network. I've got one buyer prospect who I can reach on Facebook faster than I can through email or telephone.

I have an honest question for those who say inappropriate content on Facebook makes it unacceptable for their business.... do you post listings on CraigsList? If so, how do you reconcile the fact that CraigsList is stuffed full of completely inappropriate material? Run ads in a print newspaper? How far is your ad physically located from the newspaper's personals section?

Dan wrote: "nothing is "private" on the internet." Technically that's true, but Facebook has some of the best security and privacy features out there. Sure some super-hacker could probably get through if they were so inclined. But let's face it, the same can be said for a conversation on a telephone and even one in your bedroom.... in this day and age, *nothing* is 100% foolproof private any more.

I agree nothing is truly private anymore.  I can buy a little device to listen in on my neighbors in their own homes if I wanted to or to hear what is going on at the real estate office just three doors down from me if I wanted.  I really don't care but if I wanted to do it, it is easy to find the technology.  As for inappropriate language and pics, that disturbs me too but it isn't anything like myspace where I also have an account.  I get spammed all the time on myspace too....really irritating. Report it if it is inappropriate or categorized in the wrong place.  Use facebook to find people and network, not discuss their most intimate financial data.  Obviously those images and language fails to bother them or they wouldn't be there in the first place.

They way I look at it is, if I get clients / prospects / leads on facebook, they are already there.. as the only way you can communicate on Facebook is to have an account.  If you have an account, you already know what it is about.  So, why would I worry that someone would be discouraged that I am a member?  just trying to understand ... not trying to stir the pot.

I agree Shelly. As I played around with my facebook page today, it occured to me the facebook "portal" and social networking sites in general are only a natural part of my online business, ie; blog site, website, etc...

This may sound so cliche', but in order for a process to mature one must use it.
