House-hunting couple finds homeowner dead

I know we all have stories to tell about what we find and see during showings but how would you react to this...

JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) — A couple checking out a house for sale were shocked to discover the 55-year-old homeowner dead in her bed. Authorities said foul play was not suspected.

Real estate agent Linda Chabucos- Galow stood in the dining room while Justin and Colleen McKeen walked through the house Monday night. Before long, she heard Colleen McKeen scream.

“I thought, ‘What’s wrong?’ Maybe it was a dead mouse or something,” Chabucos-Galow said.

But then she peered into the bedroom and saw the body of Linda L. O’Leary.

An autopsy determined that O’Leary had been dead for two to three weeks, Rock County Coroner Jenifer Keach said Wednesday. The cause of death remained under investigation, but the woman appeared to have died of natural causes, Keach said.

Chabucos-Galow said she had noticed a faint odor but thought it was from the mess in the house or the countertop full of dishes.

I know of another agent who discovered people in bed during a showing but they were very much alive. :)

It's sad that this 55 year old woman could be dead 2-3 weeks and that it had to be discovered by a home buyer.

Crazy story.

....so much for any future seller's disclosures on this one. Did the homeowner convey with the property?

The house wasn't getting too many showings if the seller wasn't discovered for several weeks, price was probably a little high :)

That was my thoughts too Howard.  Obviously the agent didn't keep in contact with the seller!

You would of thought that maybe after not being able to get a hold of the seller, if the agent even bothered.....that maybe the agent would of gone to check on the seller themselves?  Guess not!

I call my sellers once a week.  I'd say if I couldn't reach them after a few days of trying, I'd go take a drive over there to make sure things were ok.

I agree that it is really sad that a person would not be missed for 2-3 weeks.  She must have felt so alone.

My first thought was -- How horrible! It must have been traumatic to experience something like this.

Then I thought of a joke to lighten up the situation -- Aside for that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?

Then I thought (and this I am ashamed of) - An investment opportunity!

But, going back to my first thought, which was much more humane -- that's sad.

The agent should be ashamed of themselves. 3 weeks with no contact. After one week of calls and no return, I would have went over and checked on the home owner.

That is just amazing!

I agree, Todd.  But...did she have any family?

I read about a similar situation but it was two months!  During the summer.....the Post Office called the police because she wasn't retrieving her mail at her PO Box.  She had a daughter.

Now that's sad.

Well, everyone has hit on the reasons I posted this story.

1. What? no contact with your seller for 2+ weeks!

2. How was the showing appointment set?

3. What was the showing agent doing? Maybe the next thing on her agenda was to raid the pantry.

I guess this is just another example of sloppy agents making us all look bad. Get the listing contract, plant the sign, sprinkle a little fairy dust around for luck, walk away and hope for the best.
