The NAR comments on 60 mins program & call to actionI

Dear Fellow REALTOR®:

I am disappointed and dismayed at the biased story that 60 Minutes aired on Sunday evening. I want to let you know that we've been working to stay on top of this story.

One of the most difficult challenges we face is educating the news media about today's real estate industry. There's no better example than this 60 Minutes show. For more than a year, NAR worked with the producers who put the segment together and offered several spokespersons to be interviewed for the show, including myself. Yet, NAR's voice was strangely and noticeably absent from the segment though CBS gave time to two critics who disagree with our policies on the display of listings on the Internet.

At times, NAR and REALTORS® have often been the subject of less than accurate news coverage. Your association and its professional staff is making every effort to get the REALTOR® message out to the news media. The result is that only a fraction-less than five percent-of the vast news media we receive is negative.

We encourage all of you to contact CBS to voice your concerns -- maybe have some of your satisified customers do the same.

Thank you for your support.

Lisa,

I got this letter/email too and felt it was timely. It is good to know that NAR is on top of things. I had not watched 60 Minutes in years and just happened to catch a promo for the show.  It worked, I watched the story with my wife and we both felt it was a bit bias to say the lease!

I disagree! I don't think we should contact CBS. I think they want us to contact them and I also think they should be ignored like most of the general public has done for years. CBS' rating on Sunday night were probably the highest they have been in years, thank to all of us watching their show.

I think like most other attacks against us, we need to just ignore it and it will go away. If we contact them it will just encourage them to do another show and they can use your letters against you!

Todd, I must agree with you - let's not give them more publicity.  If the result of the program is that we have to justify our fees more rigorously than in the past then I don't see a major problem.  Shame on me if I can't show prospective clients what experience, education and value I bring to the transaction.  I've added a post on my blog explaining my policy on fees so that no-one is any doubt that they're negotiable - as they always have been!

Totally concur.  Let it become a non-event.  60 Minutes has done this to MANY industries.  Auto, meat processing, lawyers....  The more we try to defend ourselves, the more guilty we look.

It is SO yesterday.

Ha! We had an office meeting today and the topic never even came up. I think we may have been the only agents in the office that knew about the broadcast.

The NAR was so behind the 8 ball on this one, they actually made a non event into an event.
