It may be semantics, but the idea of "selling" real estate seems to be outmoded. So many different things make up a transaction that simply "selling" real estate doesn't do justice to the process.
"Marketing" is somewhat better, but it still falls short. Marketing is one of the things we do. Marketing is getting many buyers to consider the home rather than putting emphasis on waiting to sell one prospect at a time.
Information gathering and processing are aspects of the services we provide. This, I think, is becoming more and more weighty in the process. Being a real estate information specialist seems more valuable than being a real estate salesperson. However, real estate information specialist sounds a little high-falutin, and it may be construed as consultant type services.
There are many possibilities, I suppose, but “selling” has such negative, limited connotations. Maybe this is why so many people try For Sale By Owner – they say, “Hell, I can sell my own house. I am good with people.”
Perhaps it is time to re-define what we do and use language that helps in the definition. Any suggestions?
