Duplicating my own blog ... should I? Or should I not?

My question is probably directed more towards the experienced bloggers here but anyone else, please feel free to pitch in.

I like to post occasional market stats (for consumers) on my P2 website blog and would like to post something like that on AR as well. Is it ok to post the exact same thing on both or do I need to make them somewhat different? Would the search engines see it as duplicates and penalize me for that? Would consumers mind if I did that? I just find it too time consuming to write up pretty much the same thing twice. How do you go about it if you wish to post similar or same posts on different blog sites?

Michaela - I have just been duplicating mine on AR. It is probably not the best plan but like yourself, I don't feel like rewriting it. There was a program I almost purchased that will rewrite it for you and duplicate it up to 100 times with different copy so it doesn't get tagged. It was not very expensive, maybe $150.00. I just wasn't sure how well it would work on numbers and what changes it could make that would be acceptable. The example that I viewed were all text writings.

However rewriting the text portion may be all that is needed but I wouldn't use it enough to justify it.

I've been posting the same on both.  I'd also like to know if any negatives to doing it.  I thought it would give me more exposure (hopefully positive).  I'm sure there are people who see my P2 blog and not AR and vice-versa.

I'm wondering the same thing. I duplicated one post, but that's it as I don't want to get penalized and don't want to write the same post twice. We need one of the SEO experts for this.

This is one of those questions where if you ask five SEO people the question, you get seven answers...

On the scale you all are talking about, there probably is nothing wrong with duplicating posts. The "duplicate content penalty" that is often talked about but really not well understood is generally believed to be applied to intentional, deceitful attempts to manipulate search engines -- which is obviously not what you all are trying to do.

Worst case, one of your posts gets placed in the search engines main index, teh other in the supplemental index.

Mary McKnight at RSSPieces is pretty highly regarded in the RE blogging SEO world and has this to say about "duplicate content":

http://www.rsspieces.com/2007/06/19/duplicate-content-filters-explained-why-your-personal-blog-and-activerain-blog-can-have-duplicate-content

And Gary - I wouldn't spend the money on the "rewrite" software. I've seen some that will turn a post into what reads like either a bad translation or like a 3rd grader wrote it.

If you want to see an interesting exercise on duplicate content, try Googling "duplicate content myth exploded" (without the quotes). You'll be presented with link after link of the same article on site after site. If there was an all encompassing duplicate content penalty, how could this be possible?

If you want to be completely safe, you can do this. It requires very little extra work.

Write the post on your blog. Go to AR and post something like:

I just pulled market statistics for the Timbuktoo real estate market. For all the details please visit HERE (and link "HERE" to your blog post).

This works well on AR in particular, because it pulls AR traffic to your main blog.

Here's a similar example I did right here on RELib:

I should have added that "large scale" duplication, even in the absence of deceit, is also not a good idea. This is one reason, for example, that folks with standard issue P2 sites need to change the canned content. No one is trying to deceive the search engines, and they don't truly penalize sites that aren't changed. But they won't rank well because they have pages identical to tens of thousands of other sites...

Jay, (or anyone else who knows the answer) one more question if you don't mind ... I have noticed that you pretty much always post images in your posts. Do you simply cut an paste? ... or do you save whatever it is you want your readers to see as a jpg file on your computer and then upload it? Or what is the correct way to go about it? I know that with my P2 blog even just posting a simple table with market stats data takes forever ... it usually drives me crazy to a point of almost giving up on the whole thing. So now I'm thinking that maybe I should save the tables as images and upload them?
