Respectful Note To Brendan King and Dream Team

By: Lonn Dugan
Thursday, December 13, 2007 8:43 AM

I received an email from Brendan King that read much like the recent blog post at Inman (copy below)...

I would never post a private email, but this was blogged on Inman - so am not violating any confidences:

Respectfully, I sent the following reply:

########

Hi Brendan:

I certainly respect you and your Dream Team.  I admire you all and wish you the very best.

However, I must share as follows...

When you said "the why is now unimportant"... I was deeply offended.

The "why" was important enough to you for you and several friends to impose huge changes on your relationship with your audience and the industry.

As a customer of P2 - and as an Online Marketing Coach who promotes P2 sites all over the web...

     The why IS important.

As a sensible businessman I know there is MUCH more to this story.

There has to be a way to share something that would help me help my clients without spilling sour grapes or otherwise tarnishing anybody's reputation.

If that something makes enough sense to you and your Dream Team for you to start a new project, and it if makes enough sense to P2 that you guys can all cooperate on your way out, then it will make sense to the world.

I don't want to be "HANDLED" with the "not important" story.  I want integrity and truthfulness.

All my best.

Warm regards,

Lonn Dugan

BRENDAN WROTE:

As most of you will already know I have resigned as COO of Point2 Realty. Since the inception of Point2Agent I have lived and breathed the product, dreamed about the strategy and direction and worked unceasingly towards our goals.   I was not alone on this path.  In fact, I had the fortune of traveling with some of the best and brightest.  Some of those people remain at Point2 and some have left. I am sure that Point2 will continue to be a great product developed by a company of great people.   Much of the near term vision and planning is in place and I wish the best to all the remaining staff.  There have been a lot of rumors and speculation about the resignations, particularly the who and why. You can read the who here:   http://newsdesk.point2.com/blogs/newsroom/archive/2007/12/11/point2-technologies-announces-executive-resignations-and-new-leadership-roles.aspx

I think I can speak for the bulk group when I say that the why is now unimportant.  What is important is that all our great customers and friends in the industry can expect, at the very least, that Point2 will remain reliably and dependably what it is; a leader in technology and innovation.  I can't say for sure what the future holds for those of us that resigned.  I can say there are many wonderful opportunities.   I can say that I personally consider the group of individuals who resigned a "Dream Team".  I can tell you that I would love to continue working with these guys.  I can also say that we have a lot of great ideas and opportunities. I can tell you that many of these are in the real estate industry (but not all J ).   I just can't tell you anything specific – yet.  Stay tuned.

As always I look forward to speaking or hearing from you.  Feel free to contact me anytime. I hope our paths cross again in the near future.

Happy Holdiays,

--
Brendan King

Note to Brendan: Thanks for the offer but I am happy here in Texas. I don't think I have ever been offered that much money before. That new venture does sound exciting, maybe 10 years ahead of its time, but exciting just the same.

Mike:  Purpose was twofold:

First - This was to use the power of web2.0 to share my personal feelings in response to issues in the public arena.  BigWigs receive no special mercy in this regard.  Savvy companies understand they must deal with their public in an authentic way in a networked market, and that in the blogosphere SPIN is DEAD.

Second - this was to model the idea of simultaneous ONE TO ONE and ONE TO MANY communication - Taking care to go directly to the person who is in control of responding to issues instead of gossiping (which I confess I may have fallen into in recent days as an initial knee jerk).

My reply to Brendan was only made public because this is a very PUBLIC issue.  Brendan's email was public, posted and blogged about at Inman and elsewhere.  Therefore, my response is fair game for a blog of it's own - IMHO.

Brendan's email contained SPIN that yanked my chain, so I blogged about it.  I think I did so RESPECTFULLY and hope to spur a more forthcoming response.

Anybody ever read THE CLUETRAIN MANIFESTO ? > http://www.cluetrain.com

I AM THE TRAIN - YOU ARE THE TRAIN...  WE ARE THE TRAIN.

We are the VOICE OF THE MARKET and nobody can hide from the power of the networked market.

It is incumbent on us to use this power wisely and respectfully whenever possible - which I hope I did.

You're offended? What makes you think that anyone owes you an explanation?

I don't blame anyone for wanting to know, and there's nothing wrong with trying to trying to find out, but I am amazed that some think they have a right to know all of the details behind this falling out.

Point 2 is a private company and the individuals that left were employees of a private company. They're certainly entitled to whatever level of privacy they feel is appropriate when it comes to issues with their employer.

Your monthly subscription fee does not entitle you to know everything about the company and its people. Should your employer make a public announcement when someone leaves the company?

Point2 is accountable to its customers for product related issues and corporate citizenship issues. If they fail to deliver what they've promised, you have a right to complain and to demand answers. Until you're a shareholder, you have no right to demand an explanation on issues between a private employer and its employees.

I understand how "demand" is over-the-top, but I would suggest to P2, if they share the same sentiments, to watch their language and not create questions. Both Willick's and King's releases used language that begged the questions. Perhaps P2 and King should have said - It's a private matter, the company is on the same track, all is being taken care of, we assure you quality and continued innovation - period.

Oh, and he's flying here for Christmas too.  We're then picking up Vance, Gary and Tim.  He wanted though to make sure Voldermort wouldn't be there.  I assured him no.

I really need to have a chat with The King, he certainly does get around!

I have to go with Norm on this one. The specific reasons for anyone leaving are none of my business. And as long as P2 delivers a superior product, that's all that really matters to me.

Am I concerned? Sure. Deeply offended? Not even close. Brendan said they would continue to deliver, and Barry said they would continue to deliver. I have no reason to doubt them, they have always delivered in the past.

*If* they fail to deliver, then it's time to re-evaluate. Doesn't make a lot of sense to dwell on "what ifs".  Prepare a contingency plan and stay up with what's happening -- that's about all one can do.

Norm:  You are obviously a good team player, which is commendable.  I respect your ideas but come from a different position.

"what makes me think anyone owes me an explanation"

I am a customer.  I buy the most expensive cut of P2 that is offered.  I have a right to ask any question I want to ask.  My feelings are my own and I am entitled to them, as you are to yours.

My monthly subscription does not entitle me to know "everything" and I don't want to know "everything".  But when the top quarter to half of  the organization amputates itself, I want to know why.

Further, as a techie and student of the marketing game, I have great admiration for what Brendan and his Dream Team have accomplished here.  This level of accomplishment is rare.  I would like to know if it came from the Dream Team or from the part of the company that is left.

The key questions remains, what is so all fired important that the departing crew would take such a big step - what does it mean to P2 and thus to me and my web site, and what is coming next.

As for starting their own company or joining another, I repeat....

There are only a couple companies with the money and market position to attract this group.  Venturing a guess?  Starts with M.

Jay:  Are you saying you accept the statement, "You don't need to know"?  That's how I read it when Brendan says the reasons are not important.

We are the market.  The Cluetrain manifesto mentioned above pretty well covers my position.

In the old days, companies could get away with "You don't need to know".

In the Web 2.0 world, I don't think that flies.  At least not with me.

Would I buy a better smokescreen?  Probably.  But do I buy the statement that was released?  No.

Lonn,

I agree that you have the right to ask the question but statements like, "I'm offended" suggest that these people have done you wrong by not sharing openly. Let's assume for a moment that they didn't all actually resign (I have no reason to believe that's the case). Would it be fair for their employer make a public issue of the perceived shortcomings that led to their dismissal?

Hey, I want to know as well, but I think that these parties have shown a great deal of class, wisdom, and respect for the each other by keeping their mouths shut. If nothing else, that should give us some comfort. I’d be concerned if they were tearing each other apart in public. It's not easy to keep quiet when you feel like you haven't been heard. More often than not, it's the right thing to do.

Carl,

Again, I have no issues with writing about it, talking about it, speculating about it, etc. I just don't think that those involved owe me an explanation if they choose to remain silent. People still have right to some privacy. That's all.

I don't see how this thread is productive, a positive learning experience, or a good use of time.  I'm almost ashamed to write in it.  People can do as they will, and if theres a personal probelm with it, then take it personally and privately, don't try to stir up a hornets nest on a blog.  Is this what we really want people to find when searching about info on realtors on the internet, to come across some pointless thread demanding someone expose their personal reasons for doing something as private as changing a job?  I itnhk we should have better things to do.  My point2 account is just as great as it was before Brendan left, so I don't have concern for where he went, and don't see it as my righ to know where he went.  I think we should assess our priorities, this isn't one.  I'd suggest Brendan not dignify this thread with a response.
