Does anybody here NOT have a Starbucks??

By: Anson Simque
Friday, July 20, 2007 11:48 AM

Yes, that's a real question. Today 7/20/07 our FIRST starbucks opened here in Lake City, FL. Yeah, it's long overdue. We have a population of about 65,000 and just today got our first starbucks. It's a great day for the big LC!! I've already been there this morning and may have to make anothere stop there this afternoon :)

Is anyone else suffering from the lack of a starbucks like I have been until now??

We're die hard Dunkin' Donuts fans here.  Not a starbucks within driving distance of me.  When I went to Vegas, all three of us went through DD withdrawal for ten days.  I refused to step foot in Starbucks..... Sacrilege!  I know they like Starbucks in Boston, very cache. But DD is still more popular here and won a recent "favorite coffee" contest.

Anson,

Starbucks is a great 'satellite office' for meeting with buyers prior to showing homes.  It is a neutral site and provides an opportunity to discuss their needs/desires and to get the transaction broker notice signed....

and to satisfy your caffeine addiction too! LOL  I love the orange flavored ice coffee - don't know what it's called but it is quite refreshing on these hot summer days!

If you area doesn't have one, perhaps you should look into a franchise?  They do so well no matter where and a great company to work for.  How many companies like that offer health insurance to their employees?

Anson you will be happy to know that I have a client that just relocated from Puerto Rico that is a manager for Starbucks. His job is to open stores. He has spent the last 5 years developing Puerto Rico for Starbucks. They have big plans for Florida and that is why they relocated him. They are going to be opening a lot of new stores in Florida.

Randy, it is ok to throw an occasional hand grenade, as well as not utilize the services of any company that violates something that goes against your principals. That's why America is great!

OK Anson...since you asked.

Obviously as a Realtor (just as a doctor) we can not make personal judgements about the people who come to us for real estate services. That is called discrimination. Bad, however as consumers we need to keep in mind the corporate conscience of who we do business with. With most large corporations it is difficult since they try to please everybody by supporting both major political parties, issues, etc. and try to stay "down the middle". Starbucks is a different case. They have taken a pro-active stance on issues that in my opinion are detrimental to the survival of our society. I can choose to not purchase their product on moral grounds. They may make a good cup of coffee, but why should I support them? This is not unique in capitalism. We make this decision every day when we shop. It is very trendy for corporations to claim they are "green" and they seek our support on that basis. How about supporting corporations that "support life". What is wrong with that? Do your research...you will be surprised.

Well, I think everyone should follow their bliss and their conscience, wherever it takes them.

I have a husband who is more in love with coffee than anyone I have ever met. We have coffee and espresso makers side by side on the kitchen counter. The coffee he makes is so strong, you could stand up a spoon in it.

I have to drink green tea just to come down from the smell . . . LOL

Love Starbucks.  And I think my husband is the Norm of starbucks.  Where everybody knows your name....

Anyway, Randy i agree with you.  As a consumer, one should make choices about where they choose to spend their hard earned money based on the beliefs of a company.  I haven't eaten a Domino's Pizza in over 15 years and I won't purchase them or eat them if someone else purchases them.  I don't believe in the "charitable" organizations this company supports.  I think it is the opposite of your choice.  But I respect your decision to make personal choices.  Just as I have done.

Randy, It may be "discrimination" but it's not illegal discrimination unless it's against a protected class.

It seems to me that you'll talk about your 'moral grounds' when starbucks takes pro-active stance on issues that in your opinion are 'detrimental to the survival of our society', but as soon as someone who believes the same thing wants to give you money all of the sudden it's ok.

And if we boycott them, dig into the background of everyone else we deal with and see what they support or don't support. We do have a choice where we spend our dollars. Same here, Diana!  However, I used to be in the espresso machine business.  Our biggest customer was Barnes & Noble and we they use Starbucks coffee and method.  Toward the end of my tenure there, we started selling machines directly to Starbucks for coffee shops that used their coffee, but where not Starbucks owned.  Booming business, I gotta tell you.  I never once questioned their politics that whole time, however, I am one of those NW tree huggin liberals :)
