Cell Phones and Driving....Should it be illegal?

There is an interesting article in the Portland metro's largest newspaper this morning ("The Oregonian") about driving while chatting on your phone.  What do you think?  How would this impact our business if you could not answer, or make calls while driving?  Opinions, anyone?  I'm sure there are areas of the country where this is already not allowed.  How did you manage?  Difficult?  Inquiring minds want to know.... : )

HANDS-FREE OR HANG UP?

Sending shudders through multi-taskers -- and relief through safety advocates -- Oregon legislators are pondering hefty fines for people caught driving and talking on a cell phone.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to look at two bills today. One bill would ban drivers from using handheld phones; the other bill would prohibit all "distracted driving." Distracted driving means everything from personal grooming to eating to playing with pets while driving. Drivers risk a $360 ticket if they can't manage those activities and drive unimpaired.

For some agents, they should not be talking on the phone while driving.  The second bill is a bit over the top - are they going to ban singing along with the radio?  Technically a distraction.....  The change shouldn't have to be legislated, but if people are not willing to go hands free or pull over on their own, there is not other way to change behavior.

I think they are right, many times I find when I end a cell phone call I wonder how I got to where I am at that moment.  Luckily, I got there without an accident, but I sometimes wonder if it was just luck!

I don't think there is any call that is so important that it can't wait until you can pull over to return the call.  I think it is too much of a distraction.  They are great devices for staying connected with people but I think we have to use the technology in the proper manner.

It is my opinion that perhaps all cell phone activity should be limited to emergency situations on a day to day basis, when driving our automobliles.

Any alternative to this may be to establish "phone zones" within our cities, such as pull off area or city parks, where is would be safe to use them.

I have made a consious effort at this point to be answer or call when in my car, unless its an emergency.  I know personally its not only for the safety of others but also myself.

Anxious to hear others thoughts.

We as "realtors" tend to think that we must be accessible at all times, I contend that if we do business in a professional manner, then our clients DO NOT EXPECT to reach us at all time of the day or night.

I love my new bluetooth device. It is great. I can at least answer the call while driving, then if I need to have a conversation I pull over at the nearest spot and get out the pen and paper.

Phil,

I try very hard not to use my phone while driving.  I will only answer it if I have my headset on or if the traffic is very light and then I pull over at the first chance I get.

I am surprised at when I tell a caller I am driving can you hang on a minute most will keep talking.  I have dropped (hung-up) a few calls until I could get off the road.

As to the bill, I am not sure that is the way to go.  I do think it will make all drivers a little more concerned with safety.  That has to be a good thing!

Hey, Nina!

I've done the same thing!  Occasionally, when I hang up, I look around and wonder where I am.  (*I've driven safely and I remember the driving and stayed on my side of the white line, but it's a funny feeling!)

I've heard that men are bad at multi-tasking, and I can't speak for all of them, but I certainly have limitations in that area!

I drive and talk as well.

But I don't think any of us should.  There are times I don't answer...but if I am waiting on a reply for an offer or something similar to that..I will answer.  I sometimes pull over but not always.

Good post.  If it was illegal, I wouldn't do it.

I think that I am capable of supervising my own activity without intervention from "Big Brother".  What's next......can't eat in car, can't drink water or soda in car, can't listen to radio or cd player? Can't speak with other passengers while driving?  Where does it end?

I really have to agree with everyone but also need to admit that I drive and talk constantly. I do have a neat solution to the problem of being in the car and needing to take notes, numbers etc.

I purchased a small digital recording device & used self sticking velcro tabs to mounted it on my dash above the radio. When I am driving by an address that looks interesting, or someone is intent on giving me a phone number...all I need to do is push a button & record the info. Neat solution to the ever popular "where is my pen, and can I write on the back of this envelope?" problem.

FYI: I do pull over to do this. Driving, talking and recording is more than I care to take on!
