SEO Question.....Experts, please step up to the plate!

So, when we create a website, and have a link to another page, one of the options is, would be we like the "new" page to open in place of the existing page, or would be like the "new" page to open outside (in addition to, or on top of) of the existing page?....

Which way should we go?  Is there one way that is more SEO effective?  Stickier?  One that is less irritating?

Thank you all for your help and opinions!!!

I don't have an answer to your question but I noticed the new photo.  I like it...you appear very calm and a bit more casual.

Oops, maybe it's not a new pic.  Was I wrong and just didn't notice the old one?

I'd like to hear the answer to this one too. I know I prefer to have a link open in a new window rather than have them leave my site altogether but would love to hear what the SEO experts say.

I'm sending out the signal for Suzanne Stephens to enlighten us on this one.

If opening another page on your own site then replace but if opening to another site, then open a new window.

Hi Tim and Susan.

I know that's the "saying", but does it hurt SEO ranking?   On some of my more minor pages, my thought is that they are kind of sideline readings, and when someone exits, I'd like them still to be at my site.  UNLESS that hurts me in the SEO world.

And, hey there, Ginger.   Thanks for noticing!   I've been going to a different barber and adopted a new look.   Much more reserved.

I like your photo, too!   :)

From purely an SEO perspective, it doesn't matter whether a link opens in a new window or the existing window.

From a design perspective, Tim is correct -- generally speaking, open links to an external site in a new window, links to pages on your site in the existing window.

Most users find it irritating if links continually open new windows.

I frame alot of my links in my website so they are still on my site and not just going to the link (like for schools, sports teams etc)

As a better example; When you log on to P2A, and then into "Online Office".  Then click to see "Message Board".....  that takes you to a separate window.   I LIKE THAT!   When I exit out, I'm back at the "Online Office" page.   No SEO effect, I'm told.

Sorry to beat a dead horse.....

Thank you all for your responses!

Thanks Lonn it does.  I think some of this tech stuff is beyond me and I just play/tinker with my site. I was thrilled when I searched for the school district (because I can never remember their address) and my site beat the school for #1 on Excite's search.  Of course it was because of how I typed in RayPec and have no idea now if it was with no space (as above), no hyphen, or with the space. It just made my day LOL
