Search Engine Optimization Fast Start

By: Nick Coleman

For those of us who like doing our own Search Engine Optimization ... or those of us who just want to understand what it is all about ... Dan Thies (Note: I'm not affiliated with nor do I use Dan's company) has just published a new (and Free) ebook on the subject.  You can download a copy at: http://www.seofaststart.com/portal/download/

Dan Thies is very well know in the SEO world as a SEO trainer (i.e. he trains SEO consultants to do SEO).  His book focuses on "white hat" techniques of obtaining organic (e.g. free)  search engine placement.  "White hat" techniques are those that the search engines are OK with ... "Black Hat" techniques are those that try to circumvent search engines rules to achieve placement.

Even if you don't plan to do SEO yourself, the book is a good read and will help you understand what an SEO consultant should be doing for you.  (Note: you can do SEO yourself but think that if you're busy, it's worth money to use a reputable SEO partner ... but, you do need to be able to vet them and ensure they're doing they're job ... so read the book.)

THANKS for posting this! What a fabulous resource!  Dan Thies my SEO hero and is one of THE BEST in SEO, no doubt about it.  I recommend Aaron Walls' "SEO Book" a lot ( http://www.seobook.com ) and it's *great*, but it's $79 (and maybe the best $79 you can spend on your web site). But it's also 350+ pages and not always an easy read.

Dan's free eBook is "only" 100 pages, and is organized in a great, easy to follow (and understand) way.

Here's what he says about writing for web pages. SO MANY people worry about "Keyword density" and keyword placement. You can drive yourself NUTS with that stuff.

"Just write naturally, and work your keywords (including variations) in where they make sense.

Let me say that another way… Write to sell. Write to persuade.

Write to inform. Write words that make sense. Do not write in “keywordspeak.”

***** If your copy doesn’t do its job with human visitors, then you have failed, no matter how high your rankings may be. ***** (my emphasis)

You may get a very slight boost by using your most important search terms in the first paragraph, but it’s not worth doing if you lose readability or fail to persuade your visitors to keep reading. Make sense?

So… just fit the search terms in where they fit. OK? If you get all your variations in at least once, you’re doing great. You probably don’t even need to go that far, as long as all the individual keywords in your cluster get used somewhere. (Page 57/58)

The guy is brilliant.

I agree with Jay ... Aaron Walls book is also a great resource and worth every penny of the $79 (and, he gives you free book updates for life).  Aaron is well know & respected in the SEO consulting community and his book is well written but can get a bit technical. (He does respond to emailed questions if you don't understand something in the book.)  But, as a consultant, he's well beyond my budget to engage to SEO my site 8^) -- so, it's great to be ble to pick his brain via the book.

Knowledge is power ... so, even if you choose not to do your own SEO, you should understand what the consultants are going to do for you.
