How Not To Get Spammed

I was just reading a blog (Your Home Sold in 120 Days Guaranteed OR) where agents were talking about how agressive a particular training program is in follow-up emails and they couldn't get off the email list.  Here's an easy way to stop all the spam mail.

1. Set up temporary email accounts that forward to your primary account.  You can do this via P2A's email account management. This is useful when you think you "might" want to continually receive emails from the source.  So, for the XYZ service, create an "xyz@<yourdomain.com> email account that forwards to your prime account.  (Or, for any other service -- <servicename>@<yourdomain.com>)  I did this when signing up for the Proctor information and then deleted it after I got what I needed -- so, no spam from that company Big Smile.

2. Get a 'free" email account -- like hotmail.com  -- when you're asked to give an email to receive information that you only want to receive one time, use it.  Hotmail has a capability to send all email except those on your contact list to the junk folder where it can be deleted immediately or held until you delte it.  I normally have it set to delete immediately except when I'm expecting an information email.

3. If you put your email address on your website:
    a. if you don't need them to click on it to send you an email, put a space in the address -- mine might look like: nick@park city sold.com, or
    b. if you want them to click on it to send you an email, use the concept in para 2.  Then delete/change it if you start to get spammed.  Idea for these email usernames are info, information, customerservice, custsrv, help (e.g. info@<yourdomain.com>).

Great advice!

I've been doing this for a very long time now with 2 free yahoo accounts. It also gives you an idea who sells your name!

I've also been doing this (para 2) with a yahoo account. It works pretty good.

Another tip specific to Point2 sites -- Don't put your actual email address on your web site. Use the "Contact Us"  module.

Spammers have tools to "scrape" email addresses off web sites. So if you put "email me at me@myaddress.com" the lowlife spammers can collect that email address and they are off to the races.

Great idea Jay.

I have my info block on the webpages.  I think I'll change it so what looks like an email address (nick @ park city sold.com or info @ park city sold.com) actually is a link to the P2A contact us page.

That also makes it easier if the prospect uses a browser based email client.  And, a lot simplier than having to change/delete email addresses when you start getting spammed.

Following along with the suggestions that Jay posted about 'scraping', I still like to show my email address on my site but is a .gif image and it has mouseover text that says "To reduce spam, this is NOT a clickable link and you will need to type it into your email message"

How many times have you wished you could email a member of P2 when viewing their site but have to set off their Hot Prospect alert to get through to them? I have a GoDaddy email account and do exactly what Nick suggested, using the suppliers name before the @ and deleting it later when I don't want their emails anymore. It also lets you know they are passing your email address around to others.

My email address got spammed big time. I now receive spam for viagra and cialis from myself?!! SHOCK, how in the hell did they do that. An IT guy at work says it only takes 4 lines of html code to take your email address and send junk mail to everyone in your email address book and then everyone in their email address book. Like a virus. For the past month now I have gotten emails from myself for all sorts of crap. How do I stop it other than shutting down and changing my email address? I had no idea that it was so easy to be hijacked.
