New Website Experiment - Update!

Recently I posted about a little website experiment. The Phoenix MLS Search site was born over the weekend. Many asked me both on and off-line for an update on how it's progressing.

The site has been crawled and indexed by Google and Yahoo. Nothing on MSN yet. It's even on page 1 of Google and Yahoo!, granted for a pretty specifc search term, but it's a start...

Here are the full details.

Jay.... I read your whole blog post about this, with interest.

It is an interesting test.

You are right that the search term was pretty specific ; )

I imagine you are already in the google sandbox for the more competitive terms.

Best part was your test of the Alt Tag....

Your Proof that google notices is EXCELLENT.  I have felt that way, so I put it in my eBook, but had never actually proved it except by anecdotal evidence.

Now, the fact that I care about this stuff, does that really make me a "dweebiest" of bloggers ?

You may be right....  But I would rather think it makes me a serious SEO Contender ;)

Less than a week and already seeing it found by Google - Very interesting. I wish I was having that kind of result from Google.

Question???  What not do a domain name that redirects to your mls page?  I think google would rate a domain name higher. I think it is a great Idea...I will try it this week!

Indeed, it does! But there's nothing wrong with that!

LOL...

Cal asked: What not do a domain name that redirects to your mls page?  I think google would rate a domain name higher.

A properly redirected domain name (with a 301 redirect) won't show up in the search engines. You do NOT want the SEs to think there are two domains pointing to the same page -- that would result in duplicate content issues.

Having multiple domains, each with a unique web site, placed well in search engines is beneficial because it gives you multiple opportunities to be found and clicked on by searchers. Of course, it's also twice the work maintaining two sites...

Jay, what was your very specific search term?

BTW, congrats on the Carnival honorable mention for your "little experiment". And I know you are proud of being geeky.

I noticed your comment about the "alt tag"

I had been researching in p2 message boards but can not find what I am looking for.- easy instructions on how to ad an alt tag for pictures

Congrats on the new site.

Rick,

When you click the Insert Image button in your content editor there is a box just under the Image Source box called Alternate Text. Text entered there will show up when the cursor hovers over the image on your page.

Hope you can get it to work!

Howard, did you click on the "Here are the full details" link? No? Shame on you!  :)

The search term is "Search Phoenix MLS no registration required"

There's more in the blog post that's liked to...

And thanks for the congrats on the Carnival mention, and yes, I'm quite proud to be a geek!

Jay, you're right, I didn't click through because I saw your post on your blog the day before, I just didn't remember all the details when I commented. I thought it was a very nice "little" site, and exactly what the majority of the real estate consumer public really wants, search the MLS, no registration required.

When your content is good and your pages are a true reflection of your keywords, google will find you, seo isn't really all that difficult or it can be amazingly complex, take your pick. I'm only semi geeky :)
