Paid Advertising on Websites and Blogs

By: Jay & Francy Thompson REALTORS®

Need an opinion from the RELibbers out there....

I have on occasion, placed paid advertising on my website. And through a site called ReviewMe.com, I have been paid by a couple of businesses to write a review on my blog -- they pay ReviewMe, who then gives me a cut.

Moments ago, I placed a "sponsored post" on my blog. (HERE if you're interested).

All of the paid ads, reviews and sponsored posts are real estate related. In addition, I think they are things my site visitors or blog readers might find useful.

Within minutes of activating the sponsored post, I got a scathing email, accusing me of "selling out", "going commercial" and suggesting I do something that is anatomically impossible.

The subject of "monetizing" blogs does tend to stir up debate. Some feel it has no place on a blog. Others see no problem with it. I always disclose on my blog what is sponsored/paid, and my feeling is if someone doesn't like it, they don't have to read it.

I know I don't want to be blasted with advertising, but we're talking 3 or 4 posts out of over 350.

I don't really care about getting the scathing email -- not the first or the last, I'm sure. But I am curious as to folks *honest* thoughts about paid advertising / posts on a real estate web site or blog.

Thoughts?

LOL Anson! Jay, my response to those who would accuse you of selling out: Pleeeze! You're a professional; means among other things that you are paid for your expertise. I think it's great and the post is also great, BTW. I might even say the ads are valuable as desirable goods and services relating to the content of the blog.

Jay,

I sincerely think that your post offers a valuable link for people who are seeking a loan. I like the fact that you label it as "sponsored" and it is low key and it does not attack my senses.

Jay,

Firstly, I find it ridiculous that someone would think it appropriate to blast the owner of a commercially-oriented (say real estate for instance ;^) website or blog for 'selling out', or for that matter for selling (it is after all what we are supposed to be doing). If the information were entirely unrelated to your topic I  could see the concern.

I find nothing wrong with your clearly-labeled 'sponsored blog', and the topic is suitable and well-written.

I say go for it.

I don't see anything wrong with it either. How about you ask the sender of that e-mail to be your sponsor and pay for your blog-related expenses so that you don't have to look for sources of cash elsewhere? :-)

Jay, I was going to sell space on my kilt, but the blog is a better idea. I like it!

Bill, that poor kilt has had a work out. I think you should sell it on EBAY.

Jay, I don't have a problem with it at all. It's clearly disclosed and the sponsored ad is not in my face. The blog is well written and the mortgage company behind the ad is on target with your post. It's helpful.

Jay, I don't understand the thinking of the individual who took such offense to your "selling out" with a link to help your readers learn more about mortgages in today's difficult lending environment. It was perfectly clear and you went the extra step of disclosing that it was being sponsored by another service provider.

Let me see if I have this right.  You were accused of selling out.  Doesn't that mean you have to have once been NOT selling out?

Assume your blog has always been about selling...

So this rock thrower is really confused.  Chalk it up to that and move on - unless you are trying to establish a reputation as a passionate internet freedom fighter and run a charity too!

Jay it has often been said you can't please everyone. It is a very true remark. When the majority find something offensive, it is probably time to change. When the minority find it offensive it is time to ignore. In this case, ignoring seems in order!

I will have to ask my husband but I think goggle may not love this. As far as making an opportunity for yourself go for it.

We had a hotel booking system on our site and he was reluctant to do it, not b/c he cared what anyone though but b/c of some technical issue.  Can't remember.

I have seen numerous P2 sites with Google adwords on them, including interior pages. Are they 'selling out" as well? Like you posted, if someone doesn't want to read it, they shouldn't bother clicking on it. I click on Google adwords to help spend the agents money and make them feel like they are getting results.

Thanks for the comments folks! You pretty much echoed how I feel about it.

You'd be amazed at how passionate some people are about monetizing a blog. Some write pages and pages both for and against it. I even got one "amti" comment on the sponsored post that I thought was rather amusing.

LOL, Bill, if people can sell ad space on their bodies, I'm sure you could probably get away with ad space on a kilt.

Jay, if one of your links helps one person then it is worth all the accusations of selling out. Some agents tend to forget we are here to help the public. I suspect that the person the bashed you forgot that simple principle long ago in favor of an inflated bottom line selling free information.
