Brendan King on InmanBlog

Glenn Roberts of Inman News posted this today on InmanBlog:

Point2 and beyond ...

Brendan King, the outgoing chief operating officer of Point2 Realty who resigned from the company last week along with a group of other managers at the company (see Inman News story), said in a statement today that he would like to work again with the "Dream Team" that had been assembled at the company but offered no specifics about his future in the industry.

"I had the fortune of traveling with some of the best and brightest. Some of those people remain at Point2 and some have left. I am sure that Point2 will continue to be a great product developed by a company of great people," he stated. "Much of the near term vision and planning is in place and I wish the best to all the remaining staff. There have been a lot of rumors and speculation about the resignations, particularly the who and why." He referred to the formal company announcement for some of those details.

"I think I can speak for the bulk group when I say that the why is now unimportant. What is important is that all our great customers and friends in the industry can expect, at the very least, that Point2 will remain reliably and dependably what it is; a leader in technology and innovation. I can't say for sure what the future holds for those of us that resigned. I can say there are many wonderful opportunities. I can say that I personally consider the group of individuals who resigned a 'Dream Team.' I can tell you that I would love to continue working with these guys. I can also say that we have a lot of great ideas and opportunities. I can tell you that many of these are in the real estate industry (but not all :) ). I just can't tell you anything specific -- yet. Stay tuned."

Definitely sounds like a start-up...it ought to be very interesting...hopefully their "non-compete contract" is pretty loose! We'll stay posted!

Wow Jay...I just read that latest post on your site. My, my...I haven't read that many expletives in a long time!!! You know what they say about the "green eyed monster" (jealousy)...and it sure looks like he's found you.

Knowing you...I'm sure you'll shake it off, but sorry you had to get that in the first place. And thanks for all the reporting on this...we do appreciate it!!!

Yep...  I got the same message in an email from Brendan.

Apparently the startup already started.

But we have to get past this... "the why is now unimportant".

If Brendan wants to tell me my biggest question of the moment is unimportant then I don't think I will be following his next move or supporting him in it.

My opinion is that once Brendan was named to the "100 most influential people in real estate" the phone calls and offers started coming in.  To me that is the genesis of the whole situation.

How do you figure that Lonn? I don't see anything in that message that says the start-up has already started. What am I missing?

Connie - thanks. That email was quite the doozy wasn't it? It doesn't really bother me, as I suspect most people don't feel that way. The guy/gal is pretty much clueless.

For those wondering what the heck Connie and I are talking about, see this post: http://www.phoenixrealestateguy.com/reader-email-asks-whats-your-fing-problem/606

I am not sure a start up is happening or a olive branch has been extended to mend a fence. You see when you build it and they come, you hate to leave something that you have your mark upon on.

I may not be reading this correctly but it might be the time to pull in the ego's and sit down and look at the future and who can do the most for something.

This was a dream team and did an excellent job. Maybe it is time to say let's sit down and discuss how we can work toward the same goal and separate the things that put us on different paths! IMHO

Gee its to early for all of  this.

My opinion on this, just let it go in the up coming months  all of this will be old news as  in any other story.

What ever the Dream Team may have planned will surface in time if anything, sure everyone is upset when people leave their workplace it they will all become a memory.

Looking forward I am sure Point 2 will keep us posted with First hand information...to its members in due time..less all the rumors

I wasn't fortunate enough to get a personal email but I wouldn't suspect that Brendan will be quietly sitting by the fireplace in the North Woods for the balance of his career.

Having said that, whenever anyone of importance leaves a company, there are generally two items that are part of the severance. You must only say "nice things" about your departure and there will be a non compete agreement for a determined period of time.

Jay:  When I said the startup already started, I was referring to the BIG STEP that Brendan and Dream Team just took.

These guys are NOT DUMB.  And they are not acting alone.    They are acting together and took a VERY big step.

As a Coach, I often teach that getting free of the old is the FIRST STEP to starting something new.  Of course you have to DREAM and WISH for a while first.  But nothing happens until you ACT...

When the DREAM TEAM left P2 I observe that this appears to be the first visible act of the startup.  Prior to this, whatever was cooking was a DREAM or a WISH.  All Talk.  Now there is ACTION in a Direction.

If the ship has cast off it's lines, then some voyage is underway.  So - I think it follows to say - "the Startup Already Started".

Hope that makes sense : )

To Jay:

I read the comments on your blog and I think you did the right thing by posting it. It shows the stupidity of the writer. To me, he/she writes in the same "grammatical style" of Sticky, who recently posted anonymously in this forum.

I agree with Lonn that they are already starting up something, that might be competitive with other established organizations, even if they are only at the ideation stage. Brendan was tactful and toeing the line of "non-competition clause" in his statement, but at the same time hinting at a business future that may include new competition in the delivery of Real Estate services.

Bright minds don't leave an ongoing successful enterprise without well thought ongoing ideas and goals about the future direction of their careers. The reference to the Dream Team might just mean that whatever new organization comes out of the present dissension will have the best minds of the old outlet.

The entrepreneurial mind is in constant motion looking at the next project and I think that is where Brendan King and his Dream Team are at the present junction. By the way, “non-competitive contracts” are not always enforceable or might be negotiated to the satisfaction of all parties.

Mike, the last time I sent you an email, it was to play golf. And golf beats politics and corporate upheavals anyday. But I just heard from BK about playing a round in Kiawah. You can join us if you can hit it down the middle :)

Mike played very well until the "old guy" got tired and started shanking the ball into the woods and we think one might have nearly hit a house but it was lots of fun.

And before you think I was playing that well, a number of my shots found the water, woods and what not.
