Formula for failure

Do you want to know how to fail as a Realtor? It’s easy and there are 2 basic routes to take. One is to not care about learning new things, to be stubborn and refuse to change. The other is to learn all sorts of new things through MCE, designation courses and other sources and then become so impressed with yourself that you become arrogant and uncaring towards those you deal with.

The public does not know or care about designations. If things you learn from the courses make you a better agent then people may be attracted to how dedicated you are in working with them. In short, they ask and rightfully so, "What does all this do for me?"

Example: Have you ever been to a doctor that has the highest credentials, all sorts of additional letters after his/her name but seems arrogant, rushed, has poor "bed-side-manner", etc. You never return to this doctor, right? You never refer anyone to that doctor, right? It no longer matters to you that they are so well educated. If any professional becomes so impressed with themselves, that they fail to show compassion for those they deal with they are on their way down.

As is almost always true, I know these things by learning the hard way. I have made my mistakes over the years but have learned and become much more compassionate as I grow older. Bill, you are right. I am working (not very hard and diligent) on my Epro. I have no other designations but felt I needed at least one. This is a people business and it is all about meeting the buyer or sellers needs when it comes to buying selling.

It is never good to be so high minded that you are no earthly good.

Yes this is a people business and alot of people forget that.

The other night is was at a Chamber business mixer and I had some insurance agent run up to me and said his name, business name and if I had any referrals for him (yes, in that order and in one sentence!).  I was a little shocked and the guy asked if he was too aggressive for me and I replied no , but I generally like to get to know a person before I start handing referrals over (I think he did not really understand the concept of 'exchanging' referrals so both parties benefit).

Mary--I did the ePRO course and found it very helpful. In fact that is how I ended up at P2. They have a list of preferred vendors for all sorts of technical and business needs. They highly recommended Point2 along with one other website host. I looked at both and picked P2. I'm not at all against designation courses but if they make us puffed up and proud, too proud to still relate to our clients they are a negative thing. If they teach us to better serve our clients, that is great. Only other Realtors understand the alphbet soup after our name. Clients could care less.

Norman--I had to laugh as I read about your encounter with the insurance guy. I have seen this numerous times. I bet he reports back to his supervisor that he is networking like crazy but just not getting referrals.

Amen to this post! And amen to ePRO being a 'good thing'. The referrals are great and it's wonderful wonderful to be able to work with people who are in the tech groove. Our clients are very savvy and we need to keep up. This course shows you how to do that.

Don't forget that you can sign up for ePRO on my sites and get a 25 dollar discount. Use Code T5232

E-Pro was the first certification I received.  It has made my work so much more enjoyable.  I enjoyed the learning so much I went on to get a couple of designations and am currently working on another one.  I may be the only one who knows what they stand for, but my clients learn what they stand for by having their transactions go smoothly.

Bill,

E-Pro, E-coli, E-Gypt, E-commerce, E-bay or E-blog.  Who cares.

ALthough it is said we need to learn form out failures, we need to think positive and find ways to be successful.

The answers are in self.

John, Please reread my original post here at the top. I was actually making a similar point to what you say here. This post was not intended to promote any particular course but rather to promote an attitude of compassion toward and dedication to serving our clients better.
