SEO For Dummies

By: Bill Thompson, REALTOR®

I just bought the book "Search Engine Optimization For Dummies", but I am wondering if that was a good purchase or not. I see the copyright is 2006. My impression thus far is that if your SEO information was not written this morning it is out of date. Oh well, I love these "Dummies" books anyway and just couldn't resist. Most of what I know about anything technical came from these books. I am far from being a SEO expert...or novice for that matter, so if this book brings me up to 2006 perhaps I'll have the vocabulary to understand the smart folks here.

Bill I didn't know they wrote one of those.  I think any book that can explain these new to us goodies are probably pretty good.  I will look into it as well.  Then perhaps our fellow pro bloggers can fill in the blanks.

Peter Kent is the author and it is one of those famous yellow and black "Dummies" books that I love so much. I usually learn quite a bit from the yellow "cheat sheet" they always have in the front of these books.

I bought "Mortgages for Dummies" a few years back.  It's great!  Mortgages were one area that I really felt less than confident when I first started. It really helped and I've actually lent it to some 1st-timers.  They think it's hysterical that I actually admit to owning it but thank me after they've read it.

The "dummies" series can take a perfectly dry and boring subject and make it humorous and interesting.  I love them!

I just commented a mini novel.  I hope it appears.  I am to frustrated to ramble on again.

I guess I will wait and see if it appears via the magic internet .

I just want you to know I tried Bill.  If not I can ramble on again later.

Carol and Steve, that is good to hear! I am certain I'll learn something from it since I know so little about SEO.

I really like the Dummy books.  3 1/2 years ago we got a puppy - it had been years and years so I had forgot more than I remembered.  Kind of like short sales - I bought 3 books on puppy training and the Dummy book was the best.  Wish they had Short Sales for Dummies!

I consider Relib and the P2 message board my own source of SEO and other topics "for dummies" ... when I have a question, I search through both and if I can't find the answer, I ask ... the only book I seem to enjoy nowadays is my big book of SUDOKU. I too would be a little worried about 2006 SEO book being outdated. Same with real estate books ... if it's "time sensitive" such as books on foreclosures, markets, etc ... it would have to be 2007 to make me want to buy it.

Michaela, I know I have learned a lot here too. In fact I learned recently that meta tags are no longer a big deal with Google but headers are. A 2006 book will probably promote meta tags.

I learnt one other thing ... Meta description is still important. Plus, I've gotten a proof the hard way ... found out that some of my pages still have old meta description I had long time ago and those pages come up for keywords that are not even on those sites other than in the meta description. It's a mess I have to sort out as soon as possible.

Michaela, It is a never ending battle isn't it. Now you have me checking all my meta tags and I was just ready to go to bed.

I got that book a while back and have yet to open it. Anything good in it. I gave it to Erik, my partner, to read and do what is necessary to my site.

I have only read the yellow "cheat sheet" they have in the front of the book. I seem to have less free time now that I have this blogging addiction.

Maybe, but whatever you do...don't admit you have a problem. People will take that as a sign of weakness and put you in a straight jacket.
