Road Rage Advertising

By: Bill Thompson, REALTOR®
Saturday, August 11, 2007 9:12 AM

Where do you advertise? I see many agents advertise on their vehicles. That seems like a great idea and may be for most people. I saw a guy in a car obviously experiencing road rage complete with all the familiar hand signals. No, he was not advertising himself as a REALTOR®, however, he did have a bumper sticker from his church. I am sure the church is not happy with this example of a member. You know yourself better than anyone else. Is your car the best place to advertise? ;)

I am NOT a good driver!  Yet I do advertise my website on my bumper.  That is it.  Very simple and it goes well with my car.  Not obnoxious.

I do want to get a car wrap done.  I want to go over the top and want people to see me with the only Cadillac in town with a car wrap.  People will notice it and they will remember it.  I have a whole theme to go with that will be great!

I am sure I have pissed some people off with my bad driving habits, but I have yet to get a call or nasty email from anyone.  (I shouldn't say this, cause now I will get one!)

My driving habits not so bad, but I do play my music really loud and sing also pretty loud, LOL. People always tell me, "Saw you, singing and rocking out." I'm like okay, what's yer point . . . :)

Candice - I think the singing thing is a positive. Consider adding a few musical notes to your ad copy that you'd use on your car. Then you'd stand out from the crowd of agents out there. It says great things about your personality!

People would be looking to hire the "Singing REALTOR®".

I like the car magnets since you can remove them at times you want to be less noticed. I like them but have not used them yet.

Joe - What kind of Cadillac?

Joe, What is a car wrap?

I just advertise my website on my license plate holder...not sure it works but I think the magnetic signs look cheap and unprofessional

especially for high end real estate.

I would rather shave my head and run around naked than put a sign on my car.  You guys really think that is good advertising?  If I had a sign on my car, I doubt if any of my clients would even let them touch a piece of their property.

Furthermore, there out to be a rule against the type of vehicle.  Putting a sign on an $800 vehicle is like the worst form of advertising ever invented.

I agree with the sign on dilapidated car, but sign on nice car is OK with me.

I have an LED license plate frame that scrolls . . . has my website and phone number on it, which has been great. I get followed sometimes though and that can be scary.

It depends on your market, though. In ours, everyone has trucks, because we need them. And the real estate cars have signs.

LOL Ginny, Rad bald and naked could be a selling point, one never knows. . . we might be able to use him as a billboard!

There was an agent in FL who was retailing them, mine cost 200. I have e-mailed him numerous times to try to get more but he has never responded.

I'm sure there have to be some sites where you could order them, search using 'scrolling license plate frames' or 'LED license plate' or somesuch.

Mine is cool, you get software and can change the message with a little wireless laser thingie.

Is my car the best place to advertise, only when I am driving. I cringe when my husband is driving and we blow doors off passing people. I remind him I have an "image" he is tarnishing with his door collecting habits. He thinks its funny.

I think the reason for the higher visits was that we spent half of last summer traveling between southern UT and the high desert in CA.  We had a lot of time on the freeways.

I do have our website everywhere else I can get it right now.

I am sorry, Bee.  Some people just don't realize they put their driveways in a perfect spot.

I do wonder if prospective sellers might feel uncomfortable about inviting an agent over if the car is plastered with advertising, especially if they want to keep a pending move quiet initially.

I would also have to stop checking my email as I'm driving or people might think I'm a drunk.

Just reminded me of an experience I once had. I was turning right on a main road and determined that there was a safe distance between me and oncoming traffic. I proceeded to turn, quickly picked up speed and blended in with the flow of traffic. Some maniac in a truck went all out to speed up to me. Suddenly, he was beside me waving his fist and his fingers, just red in the face. I looked at his vehicle, noticed a company logo and phone number which I dialed. I asked for the manager, and while this guy continued to rant, I explained that some lunatic must have taken off with their truck this morning. I could tell it probably wasn't the first time he's heard this story and he apoloigized and promised to "look after it."

One time in LV, and no RE signs on car BTW, there was a lady in Trader Joe's parking lot who was talking on phone with kids in minivan, flat out BLOWING thru stop signs. CA plates. She almost clipped me. I, like an idiot yelled out "Well if you'd get off the fing phone, your kids would be safer"

Big mistake . . . she started chasing me down Sunset . . . for about 3 miles, chasing me, I could see her screaming at me in my RV mirror.

At stoplight, my husband calmly got out of car, holding baseball bat. "Would you like to discuss this?" She cussed us out and drove away, squealing her tires.

Placing ads on your vehicle does assure significant exposure but, you must be on your p's and q's simply because if you drive erratically or show rage that same exposure can get you into trouble with the DRE.

Ginny Lee, a car wrap is a mural across your car.

Last week I saw a car wrap advertising 'male sexual enhancements' right here in my small white collar, conservative town.  My jaw dropped, I couldn't believe it.  Can you picture the little old lady crossing the street or the town's most elite strolling down the avenue  look up, and see something like that, I can hear the phone at the police station ringing now!!

Candice, my office is in Hemet about 1.45 mins away from where I farm and live.  Hemet is growing by leaps and bounds, new construction all over the city.  Where I live (small town in the San Gabriel Valley) is pretty much established with lots of high end properties so you can imagine the populace.

I know Hemet . . . LOL, used to drive from Corona to Palm Springs 6x/week for 10 years. Worked for KDES and KPSI radio, which I bet you have heard.

I know Upland too . . . I'm a local! Back in the day, worked at John Robert Powers there and for the Ontario Recreation Department. Right before I started working in radio full time, while I was still in college, worked at Ontario High School. :)

It's hard to believe the growth but every time we go to visit my mom it's in our face. Astounding!

I DO have a magnetic sign on my vehicle so when I drive up to people's homes they know what I'm doing... either showing a home or something related to my listing.

I'm actually thinking of going over the top by getting a small RV and having it car wrapped.  I can use the RV to take buyers around in and use it for myself for road trips! HA!  Deduct the costs because I use it for business.  "House Hunt in Comfort call BR-549" on the side. What do ya think???

People remember the absurb, and to stand out a little is a good thing (sometimes).
