Award Winning Blogger

By: Bill Thompson, REALTOR®

I am curious. How many recent REliberation contest winners are now using their win in self promotion. Is “Award Winning Blogger” now prominently displayed on your website or other advertising?  If so, give me your website address so I can have a good laugh today ;-)

"Sour grapes"? Who said that? ;-)

Just put it right below "Multibillion Dollar Producer" and "Number One Realtor In the Universe". People are really impressed with that stuff ;-)

That's right, I won one. Speechless, I believe. They said the check is in the mail at the end of the month. Didn't say anything about my apple. Bummer.

You've got to admit, it brought out alot more posts which is a good thing. I think the best thing to put on your website is the customer is number 1. We can be number 2.

Well, I for one, am now considering this auspicious title on my website.  Since there can only be 31 winners (well, 32 since they awarded Catz a day early).. and then of course Candice and Mike are multiple winners, so I guess less than 30 actual winners.... I will be in special company ; )

I have been on the outside of real estate longer than I have been an insider as a REALTOR®. I can tell you, I was turned off by these claims of being a "Multimillion Dollar Producer" and other puffing of an agent's image. For one thing it makes people think you are getting rich off their equity, not a pleasant thing in a though economy. That one phrase was especially repulsive since I purchased my first home when interest rates were in the double digits, then I watched my home's value actually go down for a few years. It would have actually cost me money to get out of it during those years.

I refinanced that house when interest rates dropped to 6.5% and values went back up. I was condsidering which REALTOR® to use to list my house when I was ready to sell. We were in no hurry so I put it up FSBO and planned to use a REALTOR® later if we had trouble selling. A REALTOR® that was very active in our neighborhood called and left a message on my answering machine. She boasted of her many accomplishments, "Multimillion Dollar Producer" being among these and basicly said FSBOs are stupid for trying to sell their own houses and I had better get on board with her as soon as possible. I got lucky and sold my house quickly and was happy I did not have to share thousands od dollars with this or any other "Multimillion Dolllar Producer". I sent her a mailing saying "I sold this house...". I was always getting those postcards from her telling which houses in our neighborhood she had sold. (By the way, I actually think those postcards telling which houses you sold are a good idea but without all the bragging associated with them sometimes.)

I went through alot with that fisrt house. I invested alot of my hard earned money and time. I felt I deserved the entire profit from that house. I was in no mood to share it with a "Multimillion Dollar Producer".

I am still turned off by all these self promoting claims some REALTORS® make. I choose to tell my clients THEY are number one and not me. I am just a hard working guy who will try to help them make selling or buying a home easier and less stressful.

Just a note: I think traking production "in house" within a Real Estate company is a good motivational tool, BUT it should stay "in house" in my opinion. Bragging about the "Millions" you have produced is a negative in my mind.

Imagine going to a doctor that has a digital display in the waiting room showing the "Millions" his office has billed to your insurance company and others. After waiting an hour and a half i the waiting room and watching the number climb steadily the whole time you'd likely kill the doctor the minute you se him or her.

If their waiting room is full of material that makes you feel they really care about you and are trying their best to help you, then you don't really think in terms of dollars. You are fucused on the service they can provide.

This is what we need to do more of. Be service oriented and forget self promotion and bragging about "Millions of Dollars".

Speaking of how we present our company in our advertising.....

We are just a tiny company but then the large companies aren't big compared to those in some cities.  The 5 largest companies combined have about 200 - 225 agents between them or about half of our entire board agent/broker membership.   The "R" company is always touting their numbers (they have about 1/3 of the market) so I'm thinking about using this in our next ad....

"The Real Estate Store, where you aren't one in a billion sold."

Just to p!&& them off.  LOL!!!! (Ok, so I'm in a strange mood today).

I'm allergic to apples! ... $50 I could work with! Haven't won though ... which is no surprise since I haven't been posting anything worth winning :-). But to answer your question, Bill, I hope people here have enough common sense not to do such a thing unless they actually get some real blogging award ... one, that means something to the past, current and future clients ... not to us, the blogging buddies!
