Internet Stalking

In a previous post about being a secret agent reminded me of a situation that I have been faced with. People don't like to talk about it - I guess that's because we all like to believe nothing like this will ever happen to us.

I know some of you have been contacted by a person that maybe you were unsure about and I know that some of you have been put in uncomfortable situations before.

I tell my story to anyone who will listen because if I come up missing or something then someone may remember and will come forward with some helpful information. My first reaction was to take my picture and contact information off my website, but that just shows fear on my part to this person and I refuse to let him win. I want all potential customers to know that I am a real person. I get to know all of you by your pictures on a daily basis - it's nice to always have a face to the words - that's why my picture is on my website!

The problem is that internet stalking is very real and happenes every day to people and it's way to easy for someone to find out any information about you that they want (In my case, the person found my home address). If you are contacted by someone who wants to "stalk" you, good luck getting help!

I think more needs to be done to educate us Realtors of internet saftey because we are exposed for the whole world to see. I will admit, I am not the smartest person with knowledge about protecting my private information and I was a little niave about something happening to me.

I did sign up for a 1-800 service that's really cheap and easy to use (it was suggested to me by another agent) - all calls are forwarded to my personal cell phone. The problem is - it cost me more money to receive phone calls when this person calls me.

You are right it does happen. You should first meet a new client at your office or somewhere else that is very open. Then take their information and put it in a file. Then when you go to show homes to that person, give their file to someone else in the office.

This way people know where you are at all times. Give someone a code, that they can call your phone 30 minutes into the showings and if you give them the code they can call the police.

Just some safety tips that might help. As for the 1-800 number thing, it sounds like you are using it as your primary phone number vs as a call capture device. Try using it to capture new business instead of exsisting business then it will be truely worth the investment.

Thanks Todd!  I know all the "standard" saftey procedures when meeting a new client and I do practice them. I did have to use a "secret code" one time when I was showing homes to this guy that out of the blue said "this house is perfect for us to buy together" - he didn't turn into a stalker per say, he was just strange. I never really felt fear from him but still told my broker at the time and he took care of it.

I'm talking how to stay safe from predators on the internet. I have never met the person I am talking about. He is just a sicko that contacted me through my website, then found my home address from the internet. This is a person that I am afraid of. I can't stop what's happening with this person but maybe I can better protect myself from it ever happening again.

You maybe able to stop it, give the information you have and all e-mails and contact you have had and give it to the police today!

Rhonda -

Most people don't realize that even if you have an unpublished number with the phone company, you can and will show up on the Internet.

Several years ago, an on-line directory allowed you to turn-off your address but I don't remember which one it was.

Already did.  A police report was made but because a "crime" hasn't been committed, there is nothing they can do.  Internet stalking and stalking in general IS a crime - the law enforcement just doesn't understand it.  And often times when you do go to the police and get a restraining order - it becomes a "challange" to the predator - it makes them work harder to get at you.

What I want is to know how to remove ALL information about me from the internet.  Don't we have rights?  What right do all these online companies have to sell our private information?

I believe all states have a workplace violence act.  I unfortunately know the Indiana law.  As long as you have documentation, (i.e. phone call logs, emails, and your own personal log of dates, times, details) your employer (real estate company) should be able to assist you in filing this.  I would advise you to take this seriously (it sounds like you are) and deal with this swiftly now as opposed to later.

I have gotten phone calls from my ads, from men that start out sounding like they are buyers, but then the calls turn ugly.  It is frustrating because you want to sound professional to a buyer, but when it turns into a "stalker call" it feels so violating. There have been times I've considered not putting a photo or my phone number out there, but then I would lose business.  If I have to meet someone I don't know, I usually go with my partner or someone else in my office.  If that's not possible, I make sure I let people know where I'm going.  Just be careful and take as many precautions as possible to stay safe.
