Living on an Island or by the Ocean

By: Rhonda Doty
Thursday, March 15, 2007 6:13 PM

Fellow Realtors - My dear husband of 16 years left me this past weekend and I filed for divorce.  While I am greiving, I must be strong and move on.

I have always wanted to live by the ocean. I figure now would be a good time since I don't want to stay here.

Any realtors live on or by the ocean???  Can you please help me possiblly relocate? I don't have a favorite place per say, I'm in the research phase.

Rhonda,

I sure hope for only good things for you and your two children.  How old are they?

Anyway, I live in left the oceans of Florida for the mountains of north Georgia.  However, if I was going to start my life anew and move near an ocean, I think I would check out South Carolina.

Once again, I wish you the best!

Hi Rhonda,

Vero Beach, Florida is a quaint seaside town about 1 hour north of Palm Beach.  It's where the tropics begin.  Quality of life is good here, a nice quiet pace,  not much traffic or sprawl.  We have breathtaking natural beauty, museums, theatre and miles of uncrowded and unspoiled beaches. Vero Beach has gotten attention lately from CNN Money as the 2nd best place to buy real estate and this week we got a spot on MSNBC as the Hamptons for South Florida.  Check out my website -  VeroPremierProperties.com - also VeroBeach.com, for a view of real estate and life here.  I'm sorry about your divorce.

I have been through it and I know it's tough. I Work and live in Flagler Beach, FL. No crowds, no traffic, small town if that's what you like, perfect weather and a glimpse of the ocean from my office. We are located 20 minutes to St. Augustine and 25 minutes to Daytona Beach. I drive 1 mile to work over the intracoastal and work 3 blocks from the beach. On Fridays I walk next door to the Farmer's Market. I work for a family owned company, very small and we are hiring - check us out www.PalmCoastHomesForSale.net or company site: www.SelbyRealEstate.net.

So sorry to hear. Be strong and remember, when one door closes another one opens and everything in life is for a purpose.

Check out our beautiful island province of Newfoundland via our web site with lots of photos on our Service Area page. Real estate is very affordable and the US currency is still relativey strong when compared to the Canadian dollar. Friendly people, strong economy, low crime rates, excellent education opportunities, and miles and miles of unspoiled coastline!! We live in the oldest city of North America, St. John's. Just oozing with history and culture.

I am so sorry to hear that, you are brave. If I were you I wouldn't look at another Realtor, they are not stable these days. If that was me (I wish just kidding married 39 years) I would head for the sun and fun maybe Florida, or the Carolina's lots of nice weather. I live on the Jersey Shore too much real estate tax, insurance etc. We are just about getting a market back on its feet. Maybe, I would love to follow-up how you are doing, if you decide to come east let us know.

Hi Rhonda,

PEI is Prince Edward Island, the smallest province on the east coast of Canada.  A great place to raise children.  I guess you wouldn't know at this point if you were able to take your children out of the country.

Keep posting to us and let us know how you are doing.  We will continue to offer our support.

I am very sorry to hear about your problems. Like Kathy I have been married 39 years and she has the right idea. Sunshine is the cure, also like Barbara said Sanible Island is Paradise. It is also a great area for Real Estate. There are some great suggestion up here and I am sure you will make the right choice. Take comfort that you are in our prayers and I know that you will do O.K.

I recommend Tampa Bay (of course).  Our Beaches are consistently in the Top Ten by Drbeach.org.  Major league sports, great nightlife and still more laid back than the east coast of Florida.  Has anyone mentioned no state income tax?

Hey Rhonda, we are about 10 hours from any ocean but if you want to get away from it all, Kansas will do that for you. My little burg isn't the end of the world but you can see it from here.

Joking aside, this too shall pass, you will get through this and your big extended family here is all pulling for you...

Rhonda, I'm so sorry to hear of your situation, and it's tough anyway you slice it.  I know your initial response is to get away from it all, but really, you have to use those smarts of yours calm down, grieve, then pick a spot on the planet you can call home. There'll be lot's to do, lot's to finish up over the next many months, and putting a 17 year marriage behind you isn't something that happens overnight. Been there...done that too....just try to do a bit of business and don't put too much additional stress on yourself...or your family.

Take it slow & give yourself time to heal. I know it is awful and painful right now, but everything happens for a reason. My thoughts and prayers are with you...

Hi Rhonda,

Sounds like you're ready for a new life...Come to Victoria BC, it's the Capital of British Columbia, population around 330,000, hardly any snow, mild summers(average in 70's to 80's), Population mostly British decent with a colurfull cultural history, Victoria's China Town is the Oldest in Canada, Come for A Visit, we'll gladly show you our fair city..located on the Pacific Ocean.

I wish you all the best, read Micheal Losier book The Law of Attraction.....Then you'll attract what you want most out of life and the right sole mate. Michael is easy to listen as well.

Cheers

Dear Rhonda,

I can relate...I have suffered through a divorce (very young at the time no children) but it somehow humbled me and placed me in front of my husband of 12 years (4 children with him)..blessings come in sometimes painful disguises.  What doesn't kill you will make  you stronger....lemonade comes from lemons...these little sayings can convience you to get through the day at times.   What a wonderful idea to relocate to an ocean town.  We just moved from Palm Beach County to the North Ga Mountain area but I would agree with Vero Beach.  I have been there several times and it's still prestine.  Perfect weather.  Fair pricing.  Hey..think how close it is to Disney for the kids!  I think you would fall in love with the St. Simon Island area.  It is dreamy.  My father had a detail job and I visited him there.  Prince Edward Island is up there...been there too.  I was too young to remember the "adult details" but my sister pinched my finger with a lobster claw and we were asked to leave the restaurant by my father.  At the beach she threw a dead crab on me...so my memories aren't fond of the ocean creatures there...but I remember Anne of Green Gables and a theme park called Happy Valley or something of that nature.  It is a magical island!

Well you look beautiful in your picture.  Just one day at a time!  Keep us posted.

Charleston is a fantastic place to live. Great resturants! Mt. Pleasant, Folly beach.  Lived there.

Jacksonville is a good place to live. Lousy resturants.  Neptune Beach, Atlantic Beach, Jacksonville Beach Ponte Vedra Beach... and Flagler Beach too!  Live here.

I guess anywhere close to any beach is good! :)  S. CA beaches are the best and the worst at the same time. Born & raised there.

Watch out for home insurance costs!  Do your home work!

I think it should cost $20,000 to GET married and $50 to get a divorce. :)  Maybe a marriage contract for 6 months at a time?  You can renew if you want as long as you're happy, but you can just let the contract expire with the other person if he/she doesn't live up to your expectations. hehehe

Rhonda,

Went through this 4 years ago myself.  It's devastating whether you knew it was coming or it's a complete surprise.  Doesn't matter.

Ever thought of Cape Cod?  Our summer and fall are spectacular and the winters are pretty mild, as opposed to the rest of New England, because we're surrounded by water.  I live in Bourne, which is right on the Cape Cod Canal and the best kept secret on Cape Cod.  I reluctantly transplanted here from suburban Boston almost 10 years ago (with my then-husband and two children) and cannot imagine living anywhere else. And yes, I have lived in Florida....the summers are just too hot for me!

Best of luck to you and if there's anything I can do, either with words of encouragement or information, just let me know!

Cathy

Rhonda, so sorry to hear about that news!

I would reccomend the area of Tampa that I am in, however I LOVE Punta Gorda!  It is probably my favorite place in Florida.  I haven't been back there in a long time, but I love that little town.

I hear the market is starting to pick up down that way too!

Good luck to you!

I am so Instead of getting depressed, look at the bright side! You get to take total control of your life! Recognize that you are an amazing woman, who is a professional, as well as being a mom! I highly reccomend Palm Coast, Florida. It is 30 minutes south of Saint Augustine, and 30 minutes north of the ever-famous Daytona Beach! I also belong to a local Mom's group, which has been an absolute pleasure to be part of! When I need reccomendations for a doctor, they are there. Several women have gone through their divorces with the friendship and caring of the other women in our group. It is not a club, but merely a way to make friends, and meet other moms for friendship, and to have grown-up conversations. We have evolved into a source of information, this diverse group. We have Dads, too. Even Grandparents can be involved. We have activities such as Mom's night out,Game night(for moms only), in addition to play dates for the kids, park events, and parties for the Holidays. It is a terrific social outlet for you and your kids!

There are several houses of worship in Palm Coast, if you desire to attend a church or synagogue.

Palm Coast is one of the last undeveloped beaches in Florida. You can see the Atlantic Ocean, and the entire horizon from A1A!Not to mention it is close to Disney World! (Florida residents get discounts!)

The schools are excellent! My son recently attended the choir All-State in Tampa.

Mostly why I love it is because people from all over the world live here-I have met Russians, Brittish,  French, Asian, German, and many other ethnicities. While we have been the fastest growing county in the nation for 2004-2006, we are not inundated with high-rise buildings and industry. There is plenty of work in nearby cities, so Palm Coast is considered a "bedroom town". It was only incorporated as a city in 1999. The area is rich in history, Saint Augustine is hailed as the oldest city in the US!

Out-of-State friends and family are easily accessible by the multiple nearby airports-at least 4 major airports within a 90 minute drive.

Do I sound like a tourist book? It is only because I love this area SO MUCH! Check out my website at www.natalieginnow.com. Did I mention how AFFORDABLE it is? You could have a 3 bedroom POOL home for under $250,000!

I wish you the best in whatever you decide! Feel free to call or email me if you want to chat, or know more about my area.
