Search Engine Optimization made easy!

I'm about to reveal a secret that the search engines don't want you to know.  They don't want you to KNOW how to get top placement in the search engines.  They don't WANT it to be easy for you to do so.  They have SO many factors that play into how they generate their rankings that one might just as easily count the dead sea scrolls!  I use that analogy because while we know a great deal about the dead sea scrolls, we also know that there are scrolls that have yet to be found and who knows,  some may NEVER be found!

So what is this great secret to TOP search engine placement?  It's actually quite simple.  You must build your site and gear towards less competitive key words.   Do a search for Katy Realtor (of which I am one and it applies to my site/blog) and you get over 1.2 Million entries on Google!  Do a search for FIRETHORNE, which is one of the communities I serve and you get 31,500 results returned on Google.  Now, is it easier to stand out amongs 1.2 MILLION entries or 31,500 entries?  Your key words are CRITICAL to your success!  (if you need help with keywords, try out the trial version of www.wordtracker.com  ).

We've been taught over and over again to find your niche...well, niche marketing has never been so important as it is in SERPs (Search Engine Results Page).  If you do not find a niche to serve with your site, it's like standing on a NASCAR track while the race is going on and YELLING for the cars to stop.  You will end up part of the pavement as the field of cars runs you down!

I don't write this to be sarcastic or smart alleck.  I write it because I was having a conversation with a Doctor friend of mine and he started a new site to help the public.  He really has no interest in generating money with the site but as a part of the medical field, he thought the public should have a voice.  His question was simple enough.  How do I get my site seen and drive traffic to it with a minimal cost?  I realized as I started to explain things about how search engines work that this is just a topic that you CAN NOT explain in a 30 minute conversation.  I've been working at my site and it's optimization for 3 years now.  It's a constant learning process and I have been fortunate to talk so some great search engine saavy Realtors® over the years.  People like our own Jay Thompson, Jim Sparrow, Drew Hartanov and many others that have added to my overall knowledge along the way.  We have lots of them in the P2 community with Lonn and Jerry.

By the way, in case you are wanting to know what site my buddy started, it's http://www.reviewyourdoctor.com/  and if you have a minute, go by and register and leave a review of a doctor or two that you have used (by the way, getting the word out about a site through a blog or other means like it is known as Viral Marketing and that's a whole nother topic!).  I know he would appreciate it and so would I!

Right On Ron!

I like your NASCAR example even though I am not a race fan it kinda makes sense to me....

You are right that the whole SEO/SERP thing  is NOT a 30 Minute Conversation.

I often tell people they can probably read, in 30 minutes, everything you really need to know about SEO/SERP to rank first page for relevant searches.  The trick is knowing which things to read - which to ignore -  and how to actually DO what you just read.

Using less competitive keywords sounds like an interesting strategy.

Do you get alot of traffic using community name keywords or subdivision name keywords?

I have gotten buyer referalls from the Chamber of Commerce because they did a search for a subdivision and I actually outranked the subdivision website.  SO they called me and I got the contact info from the chamber and called the buyers and sold them a house! :)

FYI, Google and Yahoo offer a free Keyword Search tool as well. Additional to all of the above it is Important to think of a Web Site as Multiple doors not just your front page...

Great post Ron!

There is *no question* (in my simple mind) that targeting "less popular" key words works. It even has a name... The Long Tail.

I wrote a post about it on my main blog, and how we used The Long Tail to get 5 top 10 rankings in Google for a Long Tail term:

Thanks Jay.  I've seen that term, but never really knew what it meant. If you have to start out somewhere this is a great place to do so.  Like I mentioned in an earlier comment, I got a call BECAUSE I was optimized for a very small niche term.

Thanks Ron for the very interesting article.

I do like the reference to NASCAR .. as I am a Fan ... live just a short half-hour ride north of the Daytona Beach Florida Speedway ... so I could picture exactly what you were talking about with your story.

I think the neighborhood keyword is an great suggestion and will try a couple for our small community ... I think it probably works alot better in larger areas than mine ... but what the heck .. will try anything to get my site http://www.DiscoverPalmCoastFlorida.com to be seen .... I just a couple of weeks ago suggested it to DMOZ .. so am not sure when I will start showing up for any searches..... and know nothing (or not much) about SEO ... but am learning ... especially now since we have great communications on Point2 ...

Thanks Again!!!
