Getting the word out!

Point2Agent is in the middle of a Get the Word out campaign to drive SALES into their waiting arms.  They want the community who is very satisfied with P2A to get out to the various places you run into other agents and let everyone KNOW what is going on here at the Point2Agent world.

So that got me to thinking...what do I do to get people to Get The Word Out about me and my business?  Have I made enough people happy enough that not only will they talk about me if the subject arises but happy enough to even bring the subject up on their own with their friends and family?

While thinking about this topic, I know that MOST of my clients who I have helped in the past, say 2 years, would whole heartedly recommend me to someone that was buying or selling a home.  But I have to get PAST that point and get them to WANT to talk about me.

WOM advertising (word of mouth) is THE most powerful advertising you can possibly employ in building your business.  The problem is:  How do you stimulate WOM advertising when great service is just not enough!?  Can I do something like P2 is doing and rewarding people for getting the word out?  P2 is spending a very miniscule (although much appreciated by the winners) $1000 to motivate their client base to go out and generate a little more busines for them.  So how many of the agents will participate?  Out of over 130,000 agents, if 1,000 go out and spread the word, which generates 10 new clients for them, that would be HORRIBLE numbers, BUT the results would be FANTASTIC, right?

So what can Joe (or Joeann) agent do to stimulate that WOW, using the same concepts as P2 is?  Have a giveaway for Home Depot gift cards?  Dinner at a fancy restaurant?  Full house cleaning?  I don't know what motivates people to open their mouths for you (assuming your service was good enough to warrant them opening their mouths).

Any thoughts on how to STIMULATE WOM ADVERTISING?

I would be interested to see what kind of comments you get with this post.  I agree that word of mouth is definitely the best form of advertising..but I don't know if rewarding people for it works.  It seems like it's taking away from it somehow..or making it too gimmicky.  I can't put my finger on it, but something about it makes me uncomfortable.  I do agree with thanking referrals with gift certificates or something similar, but trying to entice them to do so feels false.

However, I will be watching this post to see if there are some ideas of doing this that would change my mind.

Looks like Jay is doing all the winning on Point 2!  He does put together some good blogs.  Has anyone else submitted any?

Steve and Carol, what "Seems" not right about the blog on rewarding people could possibly be that it just may be illegal!  I know if you give any kind of "kickback" it is illegal...so why would this be any different.  Maybe try sponsering a little leauge team that would produce 13-15 little people wearing a t-shirt with your company name AND your own name on it!  Think of all the people who would see it and recognize your name the next time they saw it.  Or maybe host a blood drive...again, same response....Name recognition. Or maybe coordinate a christmas angel program..or something the community would be likely to see your name and the company name! Then when someone asks about you, the response seems a little more genuine!  Just my two cents!

There is nothing wrong with rewarding the action of referring...only giving comission splits or making awards for referrals based on actual business transacting.
