Keeping a promise to a rude company...

This blog entry is more of a rant than anything.  Personally, I refuse to do business with anyone who has a bad attitude or is rude to me on the phone for no reason.  So for that reason, I'd like to go on record and mention a company with a very rude telephone demeanor because I promised them that I would when I called them back.

I was called by The Real Estate Home Show recently (and I made a post about it a few days ago about how their big selling point was "It's so cheap, why WOULDN'T you just do it?), and since then have been called 5 times.  One of the calls I had a very good discussion with one of the marketing VPs.  But since that call, I have gotten nothing but strong arm tactics and pressure to sign up.  This morning's call went like this:

"Mr. Tarvin, I see here that you spoke to one of our reps  a couple of days ago and I was just following up to see if you had any questions or were ready to get started?"

"No thank you,  I don't think that your service is really good for me"

"oh really?  Where else are you going to get that kind of national exposure?" (very snotty tone when he said this)

"Well, I don't think that the national exposure is all that great, I mean, it's on the HEALTHY LIVING CHANNEL"

"You don' t don't know what you are talking about"

"Well, I've listen to your salesmen 5 times in the last 3 or 4 days"

"well, you can't get the kind of National TV exposure we are selling... *CLICK*

And he hung up on me.  Now, I don't mind a healthy discussion of pros and cons, but nothing in that conversation points to any kind of sales technique other than strong arming.  And then to rudely hang up for no reason?

So I called them back and I got a hold of someone else.  I tried to explain what had happened to him and he said "it's not possible for me to locate someone who called you"  .  So I asked if they kept call records of who the sales people called and he said yes.  I said it should be pretty simple to look and see who called me two minutes ago!  So he told me it wasn't and I told him that I would be glad to go write a blog entry for my fellow agents to hear what I know about this company...At that point, he was interested in taking my name and number and seeing if he could get one of the supervisors to look into it.

Ahhhh, well...like I said,  it was a rant about BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE.    I certainly would not have expected Point2Agent to be "partnered" up with a company that acts like that but I'm sure they don't really know about this company's tactics....It was a promise to this company that I would write this blog entry and I believe in always keeping my promises...

I have dealt with their company in past and had the same snotty response in a similar fashion about where else I could gain that kind of exposure.  I told the sales rep I was quite pleased with the exposure I was already gaining with my other advertising sources and didn't feel that I needed their services (in an equally arrogant tone, of course).  The phone call ended shortly thereafter, though without the hang up.  These companies should realize that most people, particularly those who are also in sales, don't respond well to strong arm tactics and overused sales pitches.

Ron,

You gave them the impression you were interested because you listened.  When you listen they assume.  They thought they had a fish on the line and hence the flood of calls.

People, people, people, we are running a business.  Treat your business as a business.  Tell them the truth, be professional and move on.

Next - while I am new to P2A, don't go slinging hash when someone is affiliated if that program might/could work for someone else.  While I am not interested in those programs, someone else might be.

If, P2A hadn't been affiliated with a good alliance company and you found out about it and P2A passed on it - would you be saying P2A wasn't performing.

Look at yourself, realistically. It is about attitude and that attitude draws business to you.  How much business could we all do if our attitudes were on the right platform?  Ask yourself if your responses to your clients, potential customers have always been in the right form.  Mine haven't.  I am continually revamping my marketing, my attitude and making adjustments.

Granted, I don't like the calls either - but you gave them attention.  When you do that you are asking for it.  These sales people are only doing their job just like we should be doing.

Focus on more positive stuff like writing a contract or taking a new listing.

Wishing you a much better day.

This firm has been recommended by several groups, one of which is extremely biased in favor of making money at the expense of recommending good services...

I have had similar issues with several of the recommended firms from this group... in fact this group is called "some of the best in the industry" by point2, which is a mistake on the part of Point2... but I assume that they just have not been at the receiving end of the bad recommendations...

My experience with The Home Show was as you say... lots of high pressure calls, and when you say no, they dont hear you... I think there shoudl be a campaign about "Just Say NO!" in this respect, and education to the firms making the pitches to realize that this sales tactic alienates more than it sells.

Thanks for the warning.

But my New Years resolution was to hang up telemarkers of any kind. I'm trying to build up my arm muscles by picking the phone and hanging it as fast as I can, then waiting for the next one. I've even gone as far as taping a 1 pound weight to the phone. We need to take back our business from these people. They are out there taking our prospects and then having the guts to try to sell them back to us. If we just go back to the work we used to do ourselves, these companies will go out of business and leave us alone.

Well, I guess I might as well chime in. I bit on the REHS deal. I figured I would give it a shot. Well, it was a wasted $250.00. I got 1 call from the two listings I advertised and one of them is such a great deal I'm actually surprised it is still on the market at all being $45,000 under current market and the lowest priced home in the area. Showing on average of about 1.5 per day. The one call I did get was someone who called on a $470,000 listing and can't afford to buy a shed on credit from the Home Depot (or Lowe's for that matter - just thought I should give equal billing! LOL)

I even opted into the extra fee of $25/Mth. This was supposed to be make top billing for three zip codes. My stats are not showing a single hit from that.

I was told that they would also mail out 100 postcards for each of the listings. I ended up getting a package in the mail that was for a third party provider who is really just trying to hook you into their business. It also turned out that it wasn't 100 "PER LISTING". It was going to be 100 cards total. And since I can only design one card I have to make the decision on which of the two listings will get the 100 cards mailed. Not too mention tell one of the sellers that we aren't getting that or eat the cost myself and mail it out on my own.

The did not do the ads correctly and I asked them to make the change before it aired and they told me that it couldn't be done. I called back to go over an entire list of issues (some of which I have mentioned here) and they have offered to re-air both the listings. Although I am doubting that the second airing will fare any better as far as leads or more importantly contracts on the listings.

When I called to explain that I had been told that it was 100 cards per listing I was told by the rep that she had to talk to a supervisor and would call me back within the hour. I waited three days. No call and that is when I called them to go over the list mentioned above.

I did this about a month ago. I don't get or know anyone that has Direct TV or Dishnetwork so I have no idea of the quality of the TV ads since I won't get to actually see them on TV. Anyone have Dish or Direct that would be willing to watch and see if the ads suck or not for me? LOL

Needless to say, once the second airing occurs I will be cancelling my account with them and I am sure I will never use that service again.

I had this company call me today and the guy sounded like he was "rough" and it sounded like he was spitting and chewing something.

We have DirectTV.  I've never seen any of these ads.  What's this all about?  I get the impression P2 endorses this company... is that true?  When, where and why?

Inquiring minds want to know.
