PODCASTING?

By: Ron Tarvin

Did you just get used to BLOGGING and now along comes a new concept...PODCASTING?

My feelings are that the majority of agents out there are NOT Podcasting....yet.  Most probably do not know what it is or are too overwhelmed to do it.  I can not find a single agent in the Katy Texas Real Estate market that is Podcasting....yet.

I've decided to undertake that challenge, but I am not sure what direction to go with it.  Godaddy has just introduced an INCREDIBLE deal for PODCAST hosting (I mean SUPER CHEAP) but you have to develop and produce your own PODCAST (I had previously thought it would be produced by another company).

So, how many of you are PODCASTING?  How are you doing it (via a third party, video podcasting or audio only, doing it yourself)? And what is the subject matter you are concentrating on?  (Are you showing only listings on your podcast or are you doing more informational stuff)

Have you considered the implications of Podcasting?  Here is one that hit me hard in the last few days.  MANY of the podcasts out there are viewed on a desktop or laptop and NOT on an IPOD or similar device!  That means that you are reaching new buyers and sellers in a totally NEW format even if they are not downloading to a mobile device!

So, how about it?  PODCASTING anyone?

WOW...finally someone is taking it on.

i have been thinking about it for a while, but i always thought the effort was going to be more than it was worth. i am very interested to see how it works out for you.

how you go about setting up your podcasting is also a mystery for me. if you couldlet everyone know exactly how you go about doing this i would be very apreciative.

GOOD LUCK

Ron, it's really not new but it is slowly gaining a foothold in business and real estate, and you can do it for free if you like....

I started, and then quit, in fact... when it did not catch on right away.... (at least not in any useful way besides to sell iPods which I don't own).

To do it for FREE, Get a FREE wordpress blog somewhere - maybe www.wordpress.com or www.wordpress.org ???  Podcasting is free and built in to it.

You will need FTP space somewhere online to upload your mp3.  Once uploaded, any link to an audio file in wordpress automatically becomes a podcast page, or something like that.

Maybe I should start hosting wordpress blogs again??

I'm feeling very overwhelmed by it right now, Jordan, but I've made the decision to do it!

PS for ALL: (If you haven't noticed by my posts today, I'm back from vacation and I have decided to TAKE CALLS today and when I'm not taking calls, I'm working on MARKETING and putting together a plan that I can implement and afford to DOMINATE my market!!)

Lonn,  what about actual production and content?  Sure would like some ideas on WHAT to Podcast and HOW to create it!

I thought maybe it can be done with a digital video camera and I know there are some great software packages out there like Webmasterpodcaster.com or makepropaganda.com and that there are free audio programs to work with like AUDACITY.

I'm thinking that one could podcast video tours of properties or maybe of subdivisions or such...

As an ex-DJ, I thought this was great way to do things. I have offered free radio shows on CD. But never took the next step and started pod-castings. It looks like it should be a logical and easy step, but just havn't made the jump yet.

Ron, you are way ahead of me.  I just want to upload coaching calls and audio books.

I do that with Audio recorder and windows media player, recording .wav files and converting to MP3 With Media Player or free version of RealPlayer.

I think putting real estate video online raises the bar so high that a lot of realtors will look BAD if they try....

Yes, it can be done... but do you really want to look like an amateur movie maker?

I think the P2 Virtual Tours are enough.... as far as real estate marketing, unless the house is worth half a mil or more.... Then maybe you hire a local video house?

I am a smart guy.  I own a copy of Adobe Premiere video editing software, at cost of almost $700 or so.  I never did learn to use it very well.  I can capture and digitize video, move audio tracks around, etc, and apply stock transitions....

BUT - you want to see entire weeks dissappear into the black hole of technology addiction, just start fiddling with this stuff....

I have a television production background, love working with all the new toys and cameras.  Podcasting sounds interesting, my advice if you do it is to keep it short and sweet.  Somewhere along the line of a 10 or 15 second TV spot. Make 5 or 6 or more and rotate them. Four years ago I was producing video CDs in the business card format, they would hold about 4 minutes of DV quality video, fx and titles.  These were sent to clients who wanted more information and for introductory demos. Since then I have switched to DVDs.  I only know a handful of adults that have gotten into podcasts primarily media and marketing guys.  good luck

OK, so I have been thinking about the same thing.  As a matter of fact, a close friend of mine who is also a Realtor in my area and I are going to be starting our own podcast soon.  We have decided to just "go for it" and sit down, record something and syndicate it.  I don't have all of the answers yet on how to get it online.  In asking what comes first, we have decided to do the recording (mp3) and then syndicate it.

The format we have decided to go with is something similar to a radio talk show.  The two of us have been doing research on topics of interest in our local community that are real estate related, and we are going to sit down and just chat about it.  We expect it to run about 15 minutes and we are shooting for entertaining and informational.  The purpose will be to drive more traffic to our websites and to create the sense that we are top real estate experts in our area (which, of course, we are!)  :)  I realize it will be rough in the beginning, but we expect it to improve quickly with time and experience.

Have you cosidered videos that you can post on youtube or something similar and link them to your website. Would this be similar to a podcast or does a podcast just consist of audio with no video???

Not quite the same thing George.  I want to be able to RSS feed the podcasts.  And a podcast can be audio only or audio/video...just depends!
