Everybody wants you!

Well, your data that is.

Seems that from your database and Lowe's to your MLS data and misc. websites, everyone wants what you've got as an agent.

It's flattering to be wanted, right?  Well,  just be careful.  Today's great idea that gets into YOUR data can someday be used against you.

Case in point...I get this email this morning from a website wanting me to enter all my CLOSED sales.  Now at first glance, one might think that was a great marketing tool to send your clients to in order to see the business you do.  But on deeper thought, isn't that just a little dangerous to give THAT information to someone?  Here is the email (I've puposely killed the links in the email):

Our Parent Company (Primec Real Estate Services,  Inc) has announced their newest site. www.ListedBySoldBy.com

One of your member benefits with PrimeAgents.com entitles you to submit your CLOSED sales into the ListedBySoldBy.com database.

This is a new site and not yet announced to the public. This is the first site of its kind and the only one of its kind to date.

You will be able to submit an UNLIMITED amount of your closed sales into this site for the next week. FREE

THIS IS A TIME SENSITIVE EMAIL.

Please logon to www.ListedBySoldBy.com , create an account, login and start submitting your CLOSED SALES.

This site is for CLOSED SALES only. Please visit www.ListedBySoldBy.com for complete details.

Regards,

Support Team at PrimeAgents.com

Now what do you think they want to do with YOUR data on that site?  I had a couple of thoughts:
1. Create a site that could rival ZILLOW but be more accurate because it would have REAL AGENT DATA, not appraisal district data.
2. We know that people live in a house 2.5-5 years before they sell and move.  How hard would it be to generate a marketing campaign around those numbers to influence people in YOUR data base.

I'm sure there are other ideas that this site was built around but it's still fresh in my mind and not coming to me. However, one thing IS for sure and that is...

EVERYBODY WANTS YOU (or at least your data).

Yeah, they want you to do the work for them.  Let them go look through the public records and get the info themselves if they want it!

It could be a very clever way to create a targeted mailing list. (new homeowners )  New homeowners are good prospects for specific products, ie: fencing, lawn care, paint carpet, or for local services that they are unfamiliar with.

Closed Sales data is some of your most valuable info.  These are clients that you have both helped and (hopefully) established a good rapport.

I would NEVER share data regardless of the type, with any company.  In this day and age of Identity Theft and mass information aquisition, you never know how this could "Bite" you in the backside.  As an agent, we are held to the highest standards of integrity including the use of information we aquire.

Take the "High Road" have "great Courage" and just say NO.

Thanks in advance for sharing this with us all as it sometimes is the only way to gain the education on Scams and the like in the market.

In our MLS (ACTRIS), it is against the rules to use SOLD data (specific to any particular property) in any form of advertising. You can list your sold homes, but you can only display the asking price, not the actual sales price. You can use averages of the data for an area, but you can only be specific when working with a CLIENT for a specific property. Seems to me that what this company is wanting you to do would be in direct violation of our rules.

While I wouldn't do this website's work for them, the data they want is public information and available to anyone who wants to take the time and effort to find out. The nice thing about being a real estate agent is it only takes us a few clicks.
