NYTimes.com Spotlight Ad... Any luck?

By: Russell Volk

Hello everybody,

if you've ever tried placing a spotlight ad in NYTimes.com, I'd love to hear your feedback.  It's pricey, $125 for 14 days, but is it really worth it?  Have you had any emails, phone calls, etc. received from this ad?  I understand it brings traffic to your listing, but traffic and leads are 2 different things.

I'd love to hear any feedback.

I just finished a posting for a commercial building that was listed at $6,700,000.  The traffic was not as high as other marketing options out there but any extra exposure is good exposure.

I posted an ad for a $499,900 home which is in the higher end in my area (Pocono Mountains) and did not receive a single lead from it.  I was really surprised as it it the type of home that would appeal to local readers of the NY Times as most of my market for this home  live in New York.  Very disappointed.

Very interesting.  You would think that a source like nytimes.com would send you some quality leads.  Hmmm.

I have the same situation.  I have a listing in Northern Bucks County and it's a horse farm, about 80 minutes from NYC, so I thought that posting it on nytimes.com would be beneficial.

Thanks for your feedback.

I posted a 3mil deepwater property and didn't get any response. I got 3 responses from posting the same listing on Craigslist.

I think I will sit back and take a wait and see approach on the NY times ad as the feedback does not seem great. I have a number of listings that I think would warrant the ny times spotlight but do not want to just throw money away. I am however trying out the featured p2 and google featured status on a couple of listings - have you tried this out yet Russell?

I placed a great home here i Kissimmee Florida on the N.Y. TImes site. 4/3 pool home gated golf community (389,000). Not one response. Didnt even see any significant increase in traffic. Probably will not use feature again. Craigslist really does increase traffic for me.

Kevin, I only used the Featured ad on P2Homes and the results were pretty good.  The ad was running until mid-February and below are the stats. You can see how the activity droped after mid-February.

Listing Viewed as Featured (Grouped By Week)

Date Total

07-Jan-2007 2298

14-Jan-2007 2698

21-Jan-2007 6174

28-Jan-2007 9306

04-Feb-2007 558

11-Feb-2007 988

18-Feb-2007 165

Total 22187

Seems like the NYTimes.com ad is just not worth the money.  I'd rather invest in the Featured ad on P2Homes 5 times, than once on NYtimes.com.

Russell-That is an amazing amount of hits. How many leads did you get from P2Homes Featured Ads?  With 22K views I would expect a lot.

I've gotten 4 leads and 2 people actually came out to see the house, but seems like I had more success with the featured listing on P2homes than others with an ad on NYTimes.com.  And it's cheaper.

I'll probably just stick with the P2Homes ads.  They seem to work.

I have done P2Homes ads a few times now, and have not seen any significant increases, and no leads... I wonder if its the area that your in that makes a big differance in response, or the promotion of the P2 website.

Hi,

this confirms my experience with NYTimes.com as well, I tried it with a great 760K golf course home. No responses, no significant increase in traffic during the ad duration.  If you still like the extra exposure (and the prestige) to show your sellers, advertise in one of the real estate magazines that automatically post all your advertised listings to that site, probably a less expensive alternative.

Thank you all for the feedback on the P2 feature, I will try that next.

Did not have luck with my NY Times Ad. Zero hits.  I noticed that the search was only by county. How would someone from out of my area know what sounty Palm Springs, CA was located in? The LA Times search is  is set up in the same way as NY Times. I thought what the heck I will try it anyway. Not again.

Hey P2, you've been great.  Perhaps NYTimes.com is not so great.  I have not heard one positive response from P2 members.  Perhaps it's time to either get rid off NYTimes.com or come up with a new source of advertisement.  Seems like people are spending their money for nothing.  Spending $125 for 14 day advertisement is a lot of money, but if it's not working, let's get rid of it.  I've used your spotlight ad before and it was driving traffic to my listings.  I'd rather pay $25 for 30 days to P2Homes, than $125 to NYTimes.com for 14 days.

P2, hope you're listening.

Thanks in advance.

Just wanted to also say that I tried the Nytimes.com for 14-day........ Condo directly on the beach in Boca Raton. I put it on the Ny times when it was cold up there.......... Results: 2-3 views - no calls!

Let's get rid of them...........
