HELP! I Am falling, and I Can’t Get Up!

(DISCLAIMER: This is a fictitious story, any similarity to a real  live person or event is purely coincidental.)

I would like to ask my esteemed Point2 colleagues a hypothetical question. What would you do if your SEO started to drop?

Let’s say that each morning for months, you had poured a cup of coffee, strolled over to your computer, and punched in your very own key words. You know, the words that are guaranteed to find your very own web page.

And each day for months, you had started your day with the delightful reward of finding your very own web page in no less than the #3 position of the first page of the very same search engine.

Until one horrible morning. On that day, you poured your cup of Joe, strolled to your computer, punched in the magic words, and…nearly choked on your coffee. You had slipped to the # five position on the first page.

Sadly, each day you slipped lower and lower until you had to click to go to page 2 to find your site.  Each day, the downward trend continued until your site found a final resting place at the bottom of page #2.

The surprising thing is that you hadn’t done anything differently. You hadn’t changed any of the words that had made you so successful before.

What do you do?

Perhaps a good SEO company might be in order, but try using some of the tools that are out there.  They help you analyze your site, which might give you a bird's eye view of some of the issues.

Here's one of my favorites: http://www.marketleap.com.  There are others out there, but I just can't remember off the top of my head now.

Try analyzing what your competition is doing.  Maybe they're doing something different.  Try adding more unique and dynamic content to your site, keep blogging, use forums, title tag, H1 tag, IB links, submit articles, etc.  Perhaps a combination of all these things might jump start your climb back up.

Good luck.

Hi Russel,

Great advice! I wonder if anyone out there has more information on similar sites you mentioned or what are the fees involved.

Regards,

Hardy

MarketLeap is a free tool.  Just plug in your site's URL, appropriate details and it will give you all the info.  Also, I like to use http://livepr.raketforskning.com to check the PR of a site.  There are other great tools out there and I'll post them once I find their URL.

content, content, content. All easily achieved via your blog. If that doesn't work, suicide is an alternative approach to seo :)

I love the information Russell gave.  I am new to the "on your own" way of marketing yourself and have been keeping an ear open to hear what successful people are doing to repeat it.  Thanks Russell.

Just wanted to give you guys an update.

I've been checking my rankings in Google for about a week now... every day.  I've seen my site, slowly but surely climbing out of 3rd page to the second page.  As of yesterday morning, my site was #14 for one of the major keywords.  I checked this morning and I'm #125.  I thought I was gonna pass out.

I found a discussion on the forum where lots of other sites are experiencing the same problem.  Seems like Google is playing around with their alg. and it affects not only the site's positioning, but the number of sites returned.

Sharron/Steve, I think your site is affected by that as well.  Google started playing around with it around February 1st and mine was just hit today.  Very frusturating, but I'll continue doing what I've been doing and hopefully with time, everything will get back to normal.

Here's the link: http://www.webmasterworld.com/google/3239743.htm

Hope it helps.
