Just a Little Respect

By: Sharron and Steve Lobman

I was thinking about the impact of the recently aired program on “Too Many Minutes to Tolerate.” (The name has been changed to protect the innocent!)

It hit me that we should not feel alone. Most professions today are getting little respect because we live such a highly cynical era.

(A walk down memory lane)
In the little town where I started teaching back in 1974, I was treated with respect and appreciation.  By the time I left education in 2006, teachers had been relegated to the low man on the totem pole. It seemed that everyone blamed us for the poor performance of students. People were standing in line to point the finger: mothers, principals, superintendents, presidents, and news media.

Unfortunately, we just don’t trust anyone today. We expect the worst of our government officials, government employees, educators, entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, and pretty much everyone we encounter. So, why would we, as realtors and brokers, expect to be spared the humiliation and false accusations being experienced by most other professions?

Sharron, I truly believe we live in a society that blames everyone else for their problems and believes that everyone owes them. Where in the world has this thinking come from? I know that many may disagree with me but when we took God out of the schools we are now living with the results. Disrespect, not having to answer to anyone etc.

Yes, I forgot used car salesmen! Let me add that to the list!

Mary, I agree with you. It isnt the fact that we have taken God out of the schools, we are trying to take God out of our society.

LOL, freedom of ___________. (Fill in the Blank). It's what our society is built on. WE are free to worship Satan, Santa, Bugs Bunny or the Easter Bunny.

It be far easier to point out that splinter that it be to remove the plank. Therefore, we we deny that we are trying to use that plank the ensure that we spread more splinters.

I think that is called denial - and it's not a river in Egypt.

As we all know too well "RESPECT" must be earned. I just think the bar has been raised to high in society today with the emphasis we place on self above all else.  It used to be doing the right thing earned you respect; today we tend in some cases to respect those who shared our views and tell us what we want to hear. Our clients and to some extent customers expect us to do whatever it takes to make a transaction work in their favor, even if it means bending the rules. However, when the rules are bent and it is not in their favor we are unethical and looking out for our self interest.  When it is all said and done the big thing is "self respect."  Can you walk away with your head held high with no regrets!

Steve,

I have the greatest respect for you as a teacher and couldn't agree more with your comments. My parents, grand parents on both sides and even my brother are teachers! I just couldn't do it even though I have a love for kids and teaching. I just couldn't put up with the amount of BS that they have to put up with for the amount of pay they get. The harder they work, they didn't get more pay. The more they care, they didn't get more pay! That just didn't seem right to me!

I still work with JA, Big Brothers / Big Sisters, and coach T-ball and Softball to get my teaching fix. But, I don't know how my brother does it! My grand parents have since past on and my dad retired and became a substitute teacher. He says it is better know, if he doesn't like the kids in a certain class, he just doesn't ever go back to that class. My mom is retiring at the end of next year and she says she can't wait. The admin and goverment rules are the worst part about the job and have made teaching almost impossible! She can't stand teachers who teach to the test to get their school ratings up, just to see it fail the kids in the long run!

I think in 20 years, we may finally see what we are doing to our kids is ruining our future!

Todd,

You obviously understand what is going on in education!  I agree with your last sentence. The saddest thing is that in so many cases, we are taking the joy out of learning. We are losing many of our brightest, those kids who think outside of the box. They are giving up. Alas...

I loved the kids, and I still miss them.

I get a bit of a "teaching fix" when I work with real estate clients from out of town. I help them decide whether they really want to move to this area, if this is the right time for them to buy, and what type of property suits their needs best.
