System backups

I must admit I've not always been diligent with my backups.  I've used an old laptop hard drive in a usb hard case but I'm tired of messing with it and I haven't been backing up on a regular basis either.  Fortunately, I've never had anything tragic happen that I couldn't fix given enough time.  Even though the stars have been kind to me, I've decided to not tempt fate anymore and try one of the online backup storage sites.  I'd heard of GeekSquad before but didn't realize that they had an online backup system until today.  They offer a 30 day trial and then it is only $49 a year.  I'm going to try it.  Has anyone else tried GeekSquad or another online service?  Do you do backups at all or do you just hope for the best????

Velda,

We use mozy.com.  They have a free version which is large enough for most files unless you want all your photos, etc backed up too (which we do).  I think we pay about $5 per month for unlimited files and it backs up automatically every hour or so automatically... just works in the background.

Hi Velda, I like to use a USB flash drive to back up files. The storage capacity has increased tremendously lately as the cost has come down. I backup my Blackberry regularly and synchronize with MS Outlook for addresses, phone numbers, and other business and personal contact information.

I think you might have a greater need for a more solid backup solution. What kind of guarantees or Service Level Agreements do they offer? Is the data transfer secure? Is your stored data secure? How often do they do backups on their data?

Those are just a few questions I'd ask if you haven't already.

You should have redundant backups. Also the backups should be automatic otherwise you will find other things to do than diligiently backup.

I use Acronis True Image to backup my harddrive each night to an external harddrive. If you ever need to restore your harddrive using Acronis, all your programs, data and alll their settings will be restored.

I also use Mozy for a remote backup for just my key data (in case my place burns down and takes my external harddrive backup as well as my computer).

Restoring through an internet connection takes much longer than restoring via an external harddrive. Mozy will take approximately 24 hours to restore 5 GB so that is why I only backup my crucial data with Mozy and not my entire harddrive. A 60 GB harddrive restore w/ True Image will take approximately 2 hours.
