I'm a Lurker!

By: Tommy Fergeson

I'm a lurker.  There I've admitted it.  I read  the post on Relib nearly every day and have gained from them.  I also visit the web sites of the posters to see if I can learn from them.  I also look at the blogs on these web sites.  I have noticed that there are also many views of these blogs with little or no comments posted.  Mine is the same way.  Is this normal?

Hi Tommy!  Glad you decided to stop lurking.  I noticed the same thing on my website blogs.  Check out Jay's website.  He is one of the blog masters and perhaps you can get some tips on what kind of blogs get comments and what kind don't.

Welcome Tommy!

Same thing here.  I don't get comments.  But I believe that's more because so many people in my market are just not tuned in to blogging.  They are getting more views though, so I'll keep it up.

One tip I have that helped me with my last one, and you may already have read this, was to add some custom content on my home page telling visitors to go to my blog for information.  It worked!

Hope to hear more from you!

Thanks for posting Tommy!

Don't worry - I was 100% a lurker in online communities for probably the first year that I was 'hanging around'.  Just took a while for me to feel comfortable, but I've been spouting off every day since, and that was about a decade ago - careful opening the floodgates! :)

It takes a particular type of post to evoke lots of comments, but it also takes lots of visitors and plenty of time.  Blogs without many comments can still be of great value - in fact, some of the web's best and most popular bloggers don't even allow comments most of the time, so take heart!

Hi Tommy -

I'm an 80% Lurker - I don't post very often unless I have something to say because there are so many smart people on this that I find I learn more just by reading...  I think a lot of us are learning a lot about this "blog" thing - welcome to the neighborhood!

Howdy Tommy -- and welcome in from the Dark Side  :)

It is *really* hard to get comments on a stand alone blog. The *vast* majority of visitors never comment. So it takes a lot of traffic, and a lot of time to get to the point where people will comment. Even then, it's tough.

My blog gets about 350 visits a day (plus another 200ish reading via RSS feed). And I may get 5 comments a day, sometimes more, often less.

"Controversial" posts generate the most. Asking open-ended questions helps. But mostly it's time and quantity of readers.

And as Carey mentioned, there are MANY successful blogs out there with few to no comments. A blog can certainly work without them!

You're welcome to stop by my blog at http://www.PhoenixRealEstateGuy.com. You'll see some posts with several comments, and some with very few.  And keep in mind that blogs been online for almost 2.5 years. If you go way back in the posts, you'll see almost no comments....

Tommy, good to see you lurking no more. I'll chime in with what Jay has said and tell you that I have been blogging on my p2 site for about a year. I got very few comments for most of the first 6 to 8 months and it seems like recently I've attracted a few regular readers who will comment from time to time.

Jay has a bit more national approach to his blog whereas I stick a little more to Charleston real estate with local features and commentary on what is happening in the world of finance (mortgage) and housing.

Tommy, I enjoy writing and it's exciting to me to just be read. I'm taking a week off for Thanksgiving and I thought I would post links to my most popular posts to celebrate the one year anniversary of my blog and continue to post something fresh every day. I noticed several of my older posts with over 1000 views so even without lots of comments by readers, it is still very gratifying. Keep at it.

I wish we could opt-out of comments for our blogs...   So that no one would see there there are "O Comments".  It implies less valid content.

Carey?   Hey, my friend, good buddy, old pal!....  Whatcha doing this afternoon?....   If you have any spare time maybe you could fix it?

I agree with Phil. 0 comments makes me sound really boring.  Like no one cares what I have to say.  I'm not boring, am I?  Say it isn't so!

Oh, I'm totally boring!

Actually, Howard and I are the elected officials of "Boring Realtors of USA".    He's the big Kahuna, and I'm just the VP, but our "boring" powers are similar.  "The Hulk" (Howard), and "The Thing" (Phil).

[The Thing has “personality”….   :)    It's clobberin' time!!!!!]

Tommy, I think worrying about whether you get comments is missing the point my dear.

There is 'push' and there is 'pull'. When you post a blog, you are not really 'pulling' as much as 'pushing'.

So put the info out and don't worry. If you build it they will come.

PS Phil and Howie are not boring but they shamelessly fish for compliments . . . LOL

I don't think Amy's boring either because no one from AZ is. ;)

After much thought and talking it over with Max.  My weenie dog in the picture at the lower left hand corner of my web page.  He totally aggrees w/ Phil and thinks there should be an opt- out for comments.  I aggree w/ both.
