Postcards to Nowhere

By: Pete & Theresa Shrader

In April '07 we sent nearly 500 postcards out to our farm area, past clients and some friends, relatives & aquaintences. We used a reputable company that we have had good luck using before.

On April 23rd we got an email confirming the delivery to the post office for mailing. With a 4-5 day mailing time per the postal service the postcards were sure to arrive by April 30th.

It is now May 2nd and they still have not shown up.
The postcard company says they mailed them so they did their job.
The post office says they don't have them so they can't help me.

I tried looking up the number for the post office located in Nowhere but they must be unlisted! Big Smile

Anybody have any experience with this? What can we do? I'm just glad it wasn't 5000!

Hey Pete and Theresa,

I used to always do a spot check with clients that were to recieve our mailouts. I gave me a legitimate reason to call and say, "Did you get my postcard?"

Since it is 3rd class probably, don't be surprised if it takes 3 weeks. You also have to verify which location it was mailed from. 3 to 5 days is aweful short for anything but first class.

If you are worried about this happening in the future, consider sending first class, this way any that are undelivered will be returned to you, and you can update your list and have that person removed. Especially if you are doing small counts such as 500 pieces.

Just my 2 cents......good luck!

How very astute of your Becky!

Little known fact - The Post Office in La-La Land is staffed by people who work 23.5 hours perday, have 18 arms and are always dilligent, frinedly and prompt.

I had somehting similiar happen to me on a mailing, I ended up getting a block of returns from a building that the post office said they couldn't deliver to. It was really odd because the building is across the street. Take it for what is is....The Post Office.

Pete,

I have used third class before and it took over two weeks from the time the post office got them to the first delieries.

When I mail now, I make sure it is first class, takes the least amount of time and you get the undeliverable mail sent to you.

Another hint, I always send one to myself so I know when they are being delivered.

I always send first class now also for that exact reason. They will just set it aside and mail it when they feel like it.

Too bad you didn't use the post office in the town called "Perfect." You know the place - Walgreens has a store there. You might want to try there next time.

Call back the company that did your mailings.  The post office always gives you a printout copy of the bulkmail that was delivered to them.  The company should have this as proof of mailing.  If not they own you 500 pieces, printed and mailed for free.  If nothing else they can give you the name of the post office they used and you should go in person to see if your mail was there.  It may be hard for them to find the pieces without the printout though.  Bulk mail does seem to go out last.  Depending on how busy the post office is.  I just hope yours didn't sit around because of tax time!  Hope this helps.

Try going to usps.com

There should be an office locator by zip code that will probably give you the local office number.

It may have changed as  the post office switched to an 800 call center.

Like others have said prior it is much better to mail first class as it is much more dependable time wise.

Thanks for the tips.

The postcard company uses a presorted first-class postage paid permit stamp that is printed right on the card.

We always put ourselves on the list so we know when everyone gets them. And we also get the return to senders back so we can update the list.

I have to say that I have finally found a reason why I should stamp and mail them myself or hire it done locally even if it costs more.

We may have to join Lonn's "Quit Print" club!

The post office that they took them to is in Portland Oregon. I am in Minnesota. Not planning a trip there anytime soon but I did call there. I found the number on this handy website: http://www.switchboard.com/usps.1355/dir/6_0/index.htm?mem=1355 Put in a zip code and then click 'More Info' on the next page for the local number. Much better than the national number. Especially if you want to talk to someone that actually knows something about your local mail.

I'm getting the proof of mailing faxed to me. Hopefully they will come by the end of the week.

If they don't and the company won't step up to the plate I am going to call my credit card company and a least get my money back.

I had a similar experience earlier this year.  I always use First Class mail, but failed to mark that particular mailing for First Class and it went out as Third Class.  Taught me a BIG lesson!  Also, I always include my own name and address among the cards, so I know when they are delivered.  Plus, each time I do a mailing I can tell when they are delivered by the increase in traffic on my websites.
